I have no idea what the players will offer. I'm not sure what's left after giving up a quarter of their salaries and conceeding to an unlinked salary cap.

Bettman has all but said the owners will resort back to their revenue-tied salary cap, which the players won't accept.
What is preventing the players from forming a new league with a new set of owners?

Capital, name recognition, contractual obligations (most players are still under contract with NHL teams).

Try a minimum of 10x that loss for Detroit metro. The state alone will lose $5m in taxes just from income loss. Playoffs alone are worth $5m to downtown Detroit

Oh freakin' well - off to Fraser for me

And mikey, as much as I love you, I'll respectfully disagree. The players, imho, were more than fair - the cap offered was less than the current Detroit salary. Are you going to go to work if they say you'll never, ever, ever get a raise?
Those are not real net losses. As said before, the money wll be spent on something else.

I'll take $500,000.00+ a year with no pay raises... as long as there is a clause guarding against an unlikely hyper-inflation.

No, WSB, a lot of players (Hatch, DMac, Chelly, Drapes, etc) live in, and pay, income tax here in Detroit. Advertising revenues are a huge loss - many ad companies are on the brink because of the loss of this account.

But hey, it's economics, not engineering. WTF do I know
for the ad companies but for someone ele though we may not know who that is.

I respectfully will point out I work for a family business in an industry with lagging sales...I haven't had a raise in 4 years!

the current predicament is clearly the owners fault (or at least most of the blame is theirs!) That being said all parties need to grab fiscal responsibility by the balls here!
Bad business decisions should be punished - good ones rewarded. Let them all suffer.

I wouldn't mind seeing a new league form that screws over the current owners.

Hockey will have to follow baseballs lead and turn all their prime athletes into android popping steroid hulks.. then manufacture something like a home-run contest to gain any significant fan base back. It will take out of the box creative thinking....maybe make the nets bigger and give the goalies less pads or if they could just make Bettmen goalie at every game both ends in every arena that should work
No red lines, perhaps?

Oh, wait... I'm from San Jose so I don't know what those red lines are anyway.

You mean there will only be one disappointing post-season loss this year.
