Semi-Official I'm Thread LVIII
I'm recalling having lots of pointed discussions about holidays with my mom after moving to Seattle. I don't think she ever appreciated that it was a huge cost and hassle to travel to WI in the middle of winter, risk getting stuck (I had multiple cancelled flights but always on the way there), etc just to spend some time with an extended family that didn't seem to care whether I was there.

Since moving to the west coast we haven’t gone back for Christmas. It’s ridiculously expensive to fly from here and, like you said, people don’t grasp how much of a pain it is (especially because I get flooded every time I travel by air). Both of the +1’s parents have
passed away and his brothers live in Vancouver and New Zealand. We go back to visit but it’s on our terms.

I’m thinking that families should just agree on 1 holiday a year to get together- other ones should be up to those individuals.
For over 20 years my wife, son , and myself always travelled to be with family for Christmas eve, and then we rushed back Christmas day to be with the other in-laws. We recently started staying home for Christmas and we have never been happier, we really appreciate the change. I think we reached the point of being around family too much, and it was enough. We also had some family members on my wife' side who managed to ruin the family events by their need to drown their sorrows in alcohol. We are much better at home by ourselves.
