I’m making a long story short - I was doing my nightly duties and I hear over the intercom ‘Dave , come to customer service’ and I’m like I’m doing my scheduled tasks.
2 minutes later I hear another message but this time it’s a little girls voice and I’m like WTF. So I go up there and it turns out to be one of my favorite customers and her daughter. Daughter runs up to me and gives me a huge hug in front of all the staff.
I totally loved it and the staff was like - WTF Dave - how do you get customers to do that stuff?
I said it just comes naturally.

Zero - I’ve been in retail since 87 and I understand people. I’d have customers call me and say it’s my 22nd anniversary and I want to send flowers to my wife and I’m like no - it’s your 24th anniversary and it’s tomorrow. They would laugh and say ‘Dave how do you remember this stuff ‘ and I would always say that is my job.

I've been doing what I do for the past 28 years, many people in my field take the easy way out of doing things these days. I've always enjoyed helping people and giving the best service I could. I had a prominent lawyer call me a few weeks back, she proceeded to tell me that I am the only manager in my City that takes phone calls, I cracked up laughing as that sounded so foreign to me, that people can avoid taking phone calls. She was also amazed that I was taking her call on a Friday, as most managers can't be found on a Friday afternoon, yet it tends to be my busiest day of the week and I never finish before 5pm on a Friday. I blame my father for creating a workaholic, much like he was. It is a different world than when I first started.
