I would probably go LCD.

You definitely want something that is HD (720 or 1080) and is native to one of those. Not sure if that is possible.

As I understand it, 1080P is not an HDTV standard. There won't be any 1080P programming. Therefore, everything will have to be upscaled to 1080P. I'm guessing any improvement will be along the lines of a progressive scan DVD player vs a standard player (480P vs 480i). In othere words, a slight improvment but not near the improvement from SD to HD.

I'm sure you are familiar with avsforum. com. It's been a while since I browsed through there.
Yeah if we do this..I am leaning towards a Sharp 37" LCD...I just am trying to edumacate myself on the whole 1080P deal. I buy a TV once every 10-12 years or so...so what I buy I want to last and last and last

I really have nothing of value to contribute. My television is a floor model that I think predates even my birth. It was left behind by my dad's degenerate border, and of course dad left it behind when I moved in and he moved out.
Looks something like this:

Except mine's white (!) and rotates.

While I was searching Google for an appropriate pic, I found this!!!
Of course..only in mamish

What is the width/depth of the room?
11' x almost 17' With a huge brick jamup fireplace in the middle of the short side...which is one reason why we want to go wall mount..our 35" tube wont fit caddy corner next to the fireplace.

:corners: are no good for surround sound. Makes it pretty hard to have the speakers equally placed.

If your couch is 3' and the screen is 2' from the wall, you would probably want to go with 50" or bigger(I know I would).

If I understand the layout correctly, you will be putting the TV 17' away right?

I want a wall mount. Budgetary constraints it is 40" or less or we stick with a dying 35" toob

Yes, a little less (3 feet less maybe) with the sofa not being able to go against the far wall due to a closet
