It lost out to (at the time) JVC's inferior product but superior marketing.

FYI. I still have one of the first Betamax machines in a closet (it had 3 pieces, the recorder, a tuner AND a timer/clock unit) ..my dad (R.I.P.) was an avid electronic junkie (where I get it from)
