Wicky - I agree about your hardware assessment. I can buy year-old PC hardware and still do anything I want to, and never spend more than a few hundred dollars a year to keep up. No need to spend $3000 on a new box every 2 years with Macs...

OK...WEP can be scure...very secure, but it costs $$$. First off....don't even bother with the comsumer products you see with 256 bit WEP. It's a waste of $$$. It's just as easy to crack as 128 bit it just takes a bit longer. What's a week to hacker who wants in your network? Most hackers are pretty patient. For secure WEP you really need to implement EAP. EAP is a rotating WEP key that changes on a set increment....like every 15 mins. It's impossible to crack a 128 bit code in 15 mins unless you are super lucky....even then, you'd only have 15 mins to hack before it changed again. EAP requires that you have a RADIUS server to do the authentication. RADIUS software costs about $3000 on top of the server equipment and server licenses. If your wireless uptime is really important, then you would want two RADIUS servers in case one went down.

Here are some of the bullet points I pulled out of a document that I wrote....
