[QUOTE]Apple also confirmed that they would not stop customers from running Windows on the Intel-based Mac, although the Mac OS will not run on another PC.

Lame duck systems.
Precisely the problem my friend. Not bad equipment (and of course it 'runs'... so does my old 8086) but it's EOL. Not a time to invest in it.

I went ahead and bought the Mac mini for ma and pa. I'm not concerned about future software since they will only be using it for three things: email, internet, and music arrangement.

Basically, it's a glorified internet appliance that is small enough to hide in the entertainment center for use on the big screen. I can't wait to do a little ing on it.

How Apple handles the installed base could be huge. If the translation coder <Rosetta> is not seamless and flawless they could have mutiny on their hands! They better start pumping out some propaganda on why my machine will still work down the road, and why the person who needs a new Mac now should by one now. Mac users are fanatical...most have older machines serving some purpose (right Ken?)

I liked this

[QUOTE]Why buy a Mac now?

With the knowledge that a Mac you buy today will not even be running on the same architecture in a year or two, why would you make such an investment?

I wouldn't be convinced by those quotes.

I'm banking on the future trend of retro computers.
<-- Poised to cash in selling my Vic20 with 3k RAM and 300 baud modem.

I do think Jobs should not have shown all his cards at this time. They will need to support PowerPC machines for some time. He could have announced that they would be adding Intel based machines to their product line due to the lack of a suitable G5 chip for PowerBooks. Then let IBM and Intel race to make better chips.

BTW: What will MS develop XBOX 360 games on now? They better get all their G5 orders in soon.
