Why are Yankees Like Hemorrhoids?
Red, it's my college major coming back to haunt me.
One can't help one's true nature
That, and middle age is like a stalker, staring me down
I'll think about the new thread, but wouldn't want to clutter up the Corner. I interject enough nonsense already

Luke, Martin, I promise I'll try the low gear redline thing. Damn the torpedos; full speed ahead!
Oh, yeah, Martin -- what red said... What is that?

Autocross tires need to "sweat" out the mold release chemicals, etc. before they'll perform at their optimum. Since I'm going to a relatively high speed event (I'll hit triples), tonight I'll go out, do about 80 miles or so on the tires, get them hot, then take them off and set them aside until Thursday.
RIght on Martin and if I may...
The chemical compounds in tires change as they heat and then cool (a heat cycle). You know this from anything rubber you might have that gets hot and then cold. Outside toys, latex fun suit... stuff like that.
Tire companies try to reduce the changes due to heat cycles (by putting in Carbon Black as an early start) but they happen nonetheless.
Street tires out of the box are not at their optimum. A few heat cycles (guessing 20-50) of bringing the tires up to perfomance heat and then cooling will do the trip. Over the life of the tire however these heat cycles will do in a tire. Too many heat cycles and you won't be doing so well in your autox's.
Aaahhh but I forget, this is the Corner....
oink oink.

Ahhh, thanks for the info. I know it's always good to warm up your tires before heading out onto the track. One of these days, we're gonna buy some Hoosiers.
:dreams of the day:
For now, it's some almost-bald S02's.

Hey PWs, I just wanted to let you know that I posted (with significant trepidation -- leaving the corner is a questionable activity) a minor tome on the wash and wax forum about windshield tape. If you're interested, go visit windshield tape
