Fock, why do you have to keep making sense Pete?
I don't know, I assure you it is on accident. Here is a pic I found:
4.77 on left, 4.56 on the right.
4.56:
4.77
The 4.56 looks significantly stronger (and was engineered to be so.)
That said, the majority of failures (as I understand it) is from the pinion gear being "pushed" out the back. This is why people go with the reinforced diff. The AP2 does have a stronger diff cap than stock. Unless you are going FI and going Drag Racing every weekend, the AP2 diff is perfect for you.

All this gear talk makes my head hurt. My brain just doesn't work that way, despite being raised by a mechanic.

The bigger the number of the gears, the bigger the change.
The stock gears are 4.10.
So 4.44 lowers the top end a little and gives a little more low-end torque.
4.56 a little more.
4.77 more than that.
The one negative aspect is that you will cruise on the highway at a higher RPM than you did before in the same gear at the same speed.
Does that help?
