I was having a discussion with someone at work last night....and we're wondering if anyone here can clearly, and as simply as possible, describe the difference between horsepower and torque....

Here's something I stumbled across:

Torque is the static measurement of the how much work an engine does while power is a measure of how fast the work is being done.

Amount of work. Rate of work. Seemed to make sense to me.

 

But then, I drive a Miata which has neither horsepower nor torque...

 

Torque makes horsepower?

(that's pretty simple, even if it makes no sense whatsoever)

 

One is powered by a Horse and the other by an Orque
