Default Something to think about

I posted this in the car talk forum, and was intrigued by the comments.
What do you think?

I skimmed most of your thread's comments, as well as the original perp's story. WRX2fast4U probably should have shut up a lot sooner, and not bragged about the warranty coverage; I think that's what got ppl steamed up

I agree with charlies post over there (?those two, agree ) about the general decline of honesty and ethics. I think the WSJ has a column about it, in fact. Here's a personal exchange between me and my 20 year old son:
-ben: Hey, it's cool... my friend Zach works in Starbucks and he gives all of us free coffee and stuff.
-dad: Don't you think that's the same a stealing from the business?
-ben (an Eagle Scout): No... all my friends do it.
-dad: What if your friend worked at Staples and didn't charge his friends for everything at checkout?
-ben: That would be different!!
-dad: Hmmmmmmm...
-ben (later): I checked with all of my friends, including really straight ones; they all agreed it's OK to accept a free coffee now and then at Zach's store.

I'd agree with Ben, if it were Zach's store. But the fact is that it isn't. If Zach were paying for the coffee or giving out old coffee (stuff he was going to throw out anyway), well... that may be a little debatable.

Anyway, I'm glad WRX2fast4U got denied by SOA. I'm can't say for sure if I would be "strong" enough to inform on him, but if I did I don't think I would publicize my involvement in it.

But you know... When a someone asks you to sign something stating that you didn't do something that you clearly did, you should be asking yourself, "Maybe I should just cut my losses and walk away."

I am not sure that I agree. From what I can tell EVERY generation, has said that same thing. I think if it were true, we would be living in a lawless society.

One quote comes to mind as I think about this. "I am not a Crook." And do we know who said it? And do we rem, ember his running mate. There will always be people who are dishonest and there will always be people that have a different view of morals and mores, and I am really not sure that I would use the WSJ as a bellweather....

That was one hell of a story.
My opinion is that I am glad he was denied, especially being a WRX owner I wouldn't want to see any trouble trying to get my unmodded rex warrantied. It's a shame someone thought the right thing to do was rat him out though. I thought the point of these online clubs are to form an online community, as most of you know I don't like the Subaru club due to the immature nature and "rice-ness" of the members so I stick to the del-val club where most of my car friends belong anyway. But the fact remains, as a club we members should stick together wiether it be against the car manufacturers or other clubs.
The club members should have pointed these issues out to him. Explain that he could cause trouble for others in the future and that he was intending to defraud Subaru. What do you guys think this kid has learned from this situation? Not to trust or rely on club members would be my guess. No "real" lesson was learned. He might have to pay out of pocket for a new engine but whats to stop him from doing it again with a different car? If the club members told him he was going to make things worse for everyone else maybe with the chance he might have come clean himself. If not he could have been removed from the club for actions inappropiate of a member. Subaru would have noticed the mods anyway, I think they know the car better than the average owner.
I'm sure most of the guys that know me have heard me say that I'll only mod mine when the warranty is up, this way if I up the boost and my rear view mirror breaks I can prove without a doubt, I didn't change anything to affect it.
As for society, it's a shame that it has the "time out" mentality. A punishment should fit the crime. I stole a candy bar once and I got pulled by my ear back to the store by dad and had to say I'm sorry to the clerk. I don't remember taking a candy bar again.

Everyone knows the diff between right and wrong. The kid was wrong for trying to get off on SOA and the guy was right for exposing him.

It is a very cut n dry issue to me.

IMO of course!
