the Breaking Point, 1950
Yes I like noir, this is some of the best. Previously the Hemmingway story, To have and have not was made into a film that had llittle to do with the book/story It was a blockbuster that showcased and stared Bogart and Bacall and Walter Brennan and took place in Martinique during the war. It also had a gunfight on a boat with really bad guys. It was not the book story....
This little film was made with the rights purchased on that book and gave a nod to Hemmingway in the credits. It's more like the original story, gritty, a tale of the modern sea, and of a reluctant hero.
It's one of the best Garfield movies made. It takes place on the water between LA/Catalina and Mexico and is based in the LA area, I think they used venice as the backdrop for some scenes. So it's a plodding story of a man who is on the edge, has the best wife in the world, and two great kids, used to jockey a PT boat during the war so that's all he knows, boats. He no longer has the importance of action of his service life. He has problems making ends meet and gets hooked up with all sorts of bad characters while trying to make a living. A nod to Patricia Neal as a saucy dame who comes in and out of the story.
There is a wonderful character who is included, his first mate, played by Juano Hernendez , all part of the story. The ending is not what you would expect, oh he gets the bad guys, but at a great cost, it is Noir after all.
