You probably need to think long and hard about how you plan to use the camera. If it's too big, you won't be inclined to carry it around, and if it's really expensive you'll always be worrying about dropping/breaking/losing it. A small camera has some advantages, though obviously you won't be able to put a fisheye on it.

Pete posted DP Review. I also read Dave's site. Bit more "human" in their approach.

Note that Canon's 15 mm fisheye is $600. The XT body is $550, the XTi $575-600. Canon's 17-85 lens (a good all purpose lens) is $500, their 70-300 with image stabilization is $550-600. So to cover all your bases, you could be looking at $2000.

That's a lot of freaking money for a couple of bases.

Pete has a point about getting a prosumer model. Less capability, but very capable, for $500-750. No SLR functionality though.

btw..... I have a Nikon D80..if you want to try it out, come hunt me down in April (I'm sure you'll find me).... take the camera and go shoot like nuts..
