Dear Ron,

I'm a little concerned that the dark matter scientists at the Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics had a two week meeting that was described as “a high level of serious hysteria.”

Should we be worried?

Dear Ron,

If a person thought that the world was going to end in say 2012 would it be nice if the gave their 'friends' a load of money?

Yours in supersymmetry,
No need for concern.

Remember that academic hysteria rises as a function of the obscurity and lack of utility of the cause. Those of us not immersed in the arcana are less likely to get quite so excited.

I'm not minimizing the potential importance of such a discovery. Dark Matter and Dark Energy are two of the great mysteries right now. But if you look at the report, there's only a 23 percent chance they've detected anything, so far. We need to stay tuned, see if that percentage climbs and ponder the implications.

Yours in the joy of fundamental research,

While I'm as much a fan of pop eschatology as anyone, the end of the Mayan Long Count Calendar as the time of the apocalypse is based on a, shall we say, "enthusiastic" interpretation by Coe. Today there are factions that variously the date as the end of the world, passage into a new and transformational future or just a good time for a party. The Mayans themselves didn't seem to attach any great significance to the date.

Now, if you're still concerned, send your money to me. I will form a 501

Dear Ron:

If Huskergirl gets 10" of snow today, Smccoy gets 1" of snow today, and Triman54 gets sunshine today, how many new toys will Lotter get for his S2000 this Christmas?
