[QUOTE=Kyushin,Dec 19 2008, 10:42 AM]They are resorting to this more and more because they got shot down on putting up speed cameras.
i take great pride in my normally driving the speed limit.. hit a crusie control at posted... I get passed by everything.. granny's an gramp's.. soccer mom's in vans... old beaters.. cars one wonders how does it get a plate to be on the road... even school buses... it's total anarchary. so, with the exception that there might be some constitutional privacy reason, cops could use so many other tools then high speed pursuit or undercover cars... reference: i've lived over in germany several times an usually for a few years at a time.. driven the autobahn an city streets... they have camera's everywhere.. run a stop light.. they mail you your photo, along with your citation.. be speeding in a no speeding zone... they mail you your photo etc etc etc... i have one speeding ticket there.. nice photo... you can read the watch on my wrist clear as day... yep..that is me.. and yep my speedo an license plate and all simple, no discussion, no pressured to run from anyone, no chasing you around... they just get ya in your easy chair when you open your post (mail)
and yes.. though i haven't ever seen one... they do have autobahn high speed pursuit cars.. you better believe they can drive'm an can catch you... ( as seen on tv )
maybe the whole process needs to be better thought out... who am I to say...

not sure i agree.. i suspect alot might be reprogrammed to do other needed an undermaned aspects of the job, i don't know.. i'd love to see just the stop light camera's... it's scary watching how many stomp on the gas at a yelllow light... and i've seen more then I care for accidents... heck other day, i got to be at a turn lane, an the car in the besides me turn lane.. just took off, an our light hadn't changed... bam went their wrangler and some poor guy in a oncomming pickup... yea.. jobs... so not sure that's a real good reason not to make some sorta constructive an preventitive method to curb this insanity...
Again, the number of drivers on the road will out number the cameras and also, you can't have a camera on every single stretch of road, intersection or highway. The amount of money to have so many cameras would be astronomical. There's no state, city or county that will pony up that much money.

Camera:
One time fee
168hrs/week
No car required
No Fuel (can use solar power)
Cop:
$1000/week (Average salary for Florida State Trooper)
~40-60hrs/week
Car $30k-$50k
$140/week for fuel (avg 2.18gal/hour * $1.60/gal * 40hrs/week)
As someone who passes the same 3 state troopers everyday sitting on the side of the road at the same spot doing nothing but pulling people over(including ignoring the several cars on the side of the road that could use help), I think we could afford to lose a few of the lazy state troopers for a whole lot of cameras.

I agree that we can't get rid of all the cops, but are you seriously saying that the cameras are too expensive compared to cops????

Well, when you're making 38 grand to start in palm beach, broward and dade and 33 grand to start for the rest of the state along with outdated tech, you'd be pretty pissed off and disgruntled and sit on your ass when mostly every dept starts you off at 45 grand. FHP loses about 10-20 troopers a month to other depts. And maybe that trooper sitting on his/her ass is writing a long report or a short report or running radar or looking for infractions or waiting for another trooper.
And BTW, a troopers main job is to pull people over along with traffic and accidents on designated highways. The rest is handled by the county and city cops such as robbery, domestics, burglary, ect...
And by the way, show me a camera that can pull someone over for speeding, run their license, find out they have a warrant and arrest them or do a DUI test...
geez... without the name calling.. ( they do a hard enough job ) troopers an county an city an whomever... can be better served with better tools.. and yes when I first read the cost of this an that... all i could think of is the wasted efforts and expenses that would be deminished with better tools.. it's easier to dig a ditch with shovel then a spoon and a backhoe then a shovel... better tools makes for better abilities to serve...
i know several in law enforcement, an yes I am sure today, if not all, most would scream bloody murder if you reprogrammed their jobs cause some tool gave them help, an freed them up to better perform an serve the public...but in time they'd adapt... an since as been pointed out it's increasing.. as it should... better tools isn't some flash in a pan.. we're always needing better tools.. this, as i see it, silly cowboy chasing the bad guy across the plains or thru city streets is as insane as the crazies that because of being chased endanger everyone... ( hey if i sideswipe that van with family of four it'll crash into the following patrol car )( like we all haven't seen that on COPS )
how to place such tools, that's some design engineers job... somehow i think if ( countries i know ) england an germany can camera all they can we certainly can...
( it's late an i keep re reading this and something isn't written like i'm thinking but.. best i can right now )

If so, I agree.
Because other posters here were saying to do away with cops and just add cameras....
