HELP!
Sounds about right...most places don't check the the oil right after a change. They dump the old oil, change the filter and then fill it up and call it a day. Doing it that way doesn't account for the ammount of oil the filter holds, which is about half-quart...so being half-way on the dipstick doesn't suprize me.
Sorry to say but I think it is probably your no. 4 rod bearing. This is very common for pre-02 model cars. When you tear it apart you will probably find the No. 4 cylinder scored also.
Single hole banjo, (oil bolt), coupled with maybe running low on oil.
Put a big screw drive to you ear and touch the tip to the motor in various places to locate noise. If you can go by Harbor Freight tools they have a sale on mechanics stethoscope. Ticking in the bottom of the motor that varies with engine speed is probably your bearing.
