Bad experience
OMG this is horrible.
I know of a friend who used to be a car salesman for a small local dealer of used cars. He would tell me stories of how they used to blatantly LIE to customers all the time about the true conditions of the car, even as far as doctoring CarFax reports (not sure how they can do that), how 75% of the used cars on the lot were totalled/stripped and salvaged and how they screwed people by getting a sign the "SOLD AS IS" clause.
I know nothing of the laws in GA, but if you signed a contract stating "SOLD AS IN", the law isn't in your favor. I suggest that maybe you speak to the dealership's manager and go from there. Contacting the local media or Dateline NBC wouldn't be a bad idea.

BTW, Consumer Reports just ran a big story on this sort of thing in the Jan 2002 issue. You might check it out just for some added info. They also mention that CarFax won't always give you everything you would like to see.
PITA. Good luck.

Ok, first of all, I'm really sorry to hear about this. It sounds like one hell of a pinch!
I also have a question: I, too, am considering the purchase of a used S in a few months. What steps can be taken for future used buyers to prevent this type of thing? Its pretty clear that Carfax isn't 100% safe. Beyond that, and posting the VIN here for people to check out, what actions does one take to safeguard?
