way to follow the dream, man!
i came in from the bottom and worked my way up without a degree or any formal education because I dreamed of doing what I am doing and had passion and love for it and there were tough times, but I'm freelancing fulltime now, making my own rules and hours.
Ya'know what? I'm loving it.
Yaknow what else? I'm making way more than I have at any previous job.

Hows THEM apples?

Follow the dream, be GREAT at it and the money will follow. You might not get rich, but if you've got the passion and talent, you'll certainly be well off. I'd love to see some of your own photography - it seems as if your mentor has made a name for himself. That's one helluva difficult profession to do that in.

Maybe you wanna be a guest photographer on this little show I'm working on? Seriously, our first episode should be airing very soon in Arlington (public access, but sooo much more than public access)... And the next episodes are going to blow the socks off the first. PM me if you're interested... If nothing else, we can share notes and maybe you can come and crew our next shoot!

One of our next models: http://www.onemodelplace.com/model_list.cfm?ID=27696
(FHM, Stuff, The Bachelor, West Wing...)

So, yeah, good luck!!!

edit: you might wanna check out the people forum over at http://www.fredmiranda.com too... fun stuff.

Thanks for the offer, but I don't think I'll fit into your show with very very little experience. I'm having a hard time conentrating on one aspect of photography. Maybe you could give me some pointers. And I only have the basic alienbee light setup that was only like $300 (two lights with umbrellas). Started out doing coverage for websites. Then got picked up doing coverage for a local magazine. From doing shows, I've done 2 model shoots since my prices are half of those these girls have seen. Looks like I'll be picked up to shoot a wedding and reception. argh. Might do a nude shoot for a friend of mine because playboy will be visiting her in august. She wants headshots and shots of the goods (nothing artistic though)

As far as the FredMiranda forums, been part of it the last 2 months. got the same name on there: C45P312. This is my main source of info and equipement. I dont have many lenses yet but I still want it to grow.

Canon 20D
Canon Vert Grip
Canon 580ex Flash
Canon 17mm-85mm IS
Canon 70-200MM
Canon 50MM f/1.8

But yeah, Any pointers will help. I really wanted to go to the DC FM photoshoot but due to car stuff I was preoccupied.

Let me know if you need anything, I'm always down to learn new things in the communications field.

Hey, you don't need much experience! Every experience is a learning experience, anyway

I've got 2 alien bees myself and to be honest, you don't need too much more than that to get great results. I'm probably going to be adding a couple more and some more wireless receivers to the setup, but it's not really necessary.

Your equipment list covers the basics very well and you should be able to get great mileage out of that. the 50/1.8 is a great all-around lens. While I'd love the 24-70/2.8 I don't see dropping that much cash for such a lens just now - I've got the 28-135 which is awesome for studio use and was my main workhorse at the last shoot.

I went to the DC FM shoot in January and it was very cool, but I wasn't feeling this one, plus I've been sooo busy with regular work and the tv show. We can always use an extra hand on set if you're interested. We may be shooting on location if things work out at Cafe Japone in DC.

Just keep shooting, keep practicing and trying new things. I'm certainly not limiting myself to model work, but it is something I'm focusing on. No interest in weddings, myself, but automotive photography is high on the list (whodathunkit?). I'm really just a relative newbie myself, but by getting out there and forcing myself into real-world situations, I've learned a ton, even got a bunch of (paid) shots in Grassroots Motorsports, all shot at last year's Hyperfest.

If you want to spend some cash on camera equipment, I'd recommend a GOOD solid tripod (~$150, about 2x more for carbon fiber), a wired remote, a pair of pocket wizards for the lights, and a couple of heavy-duty light stands, one with a boom. Oh, and the grid set from AB is great (10,20,30,40 degree). A medium-large softbox and/or large beauty dish are also awesome additions.

So yeah, if you're interested in helping out, lemme know
