They were talking about the HD dvd battle on WBAL and they don't think this war really matters. You're talking about 10-20,000 HD-DVDs or Blu-Ray discs compared to 100x that in standard DVD sales.

Meaning that similar to Laserdisc, HD-DVD and Blu-Ray may go the way of the dinosaur when a different medium takes over.

it took about 18 months between major titles being available on DVD to DVD player sales to pass the 1 million mark... So yeah, I guess HD is slow out of the gates.

There's very little "benefit" to HD/BR. Between VHS and DVD, the DVDs could be more quickly mass-produced and are an overall cheaper medium (for the manufacturer). That's likely the reason you don't see the big "push" to moving to HD/BR. Plus, I am pretty sure a very small sample of the population has HD tvs, so it costs the consumers quite a bit more to "upgrade" to HD/BR instead of just going out and buying a DVD player for your SD tv.

Anyone know when the FCC mandated that all broadcast content be moved to HD? Everyone with a television will need it to be replaced with an HD unit by then.

Edit: Nevermind, the mandate was for digital broadcast, not specifically high-definition.

Is it comparable to the jump between VHS to DVD? No. Is there a benefit? Most definitely. More people have HD TV's than you think. They don't all have 1080p sets(I don't), but there are many people watching tv broadcasts and dvd's in high definition. 1080i HD tv's have been around for over 6 yrs- I know, I've had one at least that long.

Just for that, I'm not buying your transmission.

BTW: Stephanie has a new 1080p LCD set at her apartment...

It completely shames my projector setup. But at least I still have the Boston Acoustics audio!
