Hey, I notice my oil level was getting down to the last "x" on the dipstick, so I poured a full quart in. This brought the level all the way up to the top "x" and maybe even a little bit over. I didn't think one quart would be that much but I guess it is. So now what do I do and what potential problems could there be??????

Thanks people!

Ohhhh, duuuuude....bad news....man.

No, nothing traumatic will happen, actually. Under severe lateral load you may notice that you blow plumes of smoke out the tailpipes as oil gets introduced into places that aren't normal...but nothing major should happen. That is unless you WAAAAY overfill it. The degree you are talking about is not going to hurt anything, though...

Way more work than it is worth considering this is a minor overfill. Don't bother.

A slight overfill should be fine. However, there's the potential for serious damage to be done if it's grossly overfilled - the crankshaft counterweights "whip" air into the oil as the pas through or very near the oil surface in the pan. Air and oil does not lubricate NEARLY as well as oil alone, especially at 9K RPM.

It does, indeed, pay to make sure you add only the correct amount of oil. The unanswered question is - how much is too much? Personally, I'd be worried with a quart extra but we don't know how the dipstick would register that amount (and I'm not about to find out)...

I remember a story of a girl in high school that filled the oil in her Audi Fox until it was full, to the top of the valve cover! I don't remember the outcome of that fiasco.

redleader,

A quart is too much for on "x". You should have poured 1/4 a quart or something.

I would just go to O Rielly, get a oil catch...and let some oil out (good time to do an oil change actually).
