Deadener--Where is it needed, liquid v. mat, best brand?
Hi,
I just put in my new system yesterday and it sounds great but when I turn it up, the trunk rattles like crazy. Of course, sound deadener is the answer but I've got some questions about it...
Where do I need it? I know the trunk lid for sure but is it important to have it on the sides and underneath the sub box on the trunk floor? Another related question is how many square feet do I need?
It seems there are two types, liquid and mat (and mat can be broken down into the "extreme" type or the "lite" type). Which is better for my application?
Also, there are a lot of brands out there covering a big price range. Are there any significant differences between the brands and is there any one "best" brand?

All of the mats are rebadged from the sound industry. I bought a roll of deadener in bulk for about 1/6 the cost of Dynamat. You do not need to cover all surfaces. Small pieces about 6" by 6" work well when properly placed. Knock on the surfaces with your knuckle and listen for the loudest or loosest part. Then stick a piece there. Actually very little is needed. The sellers of this stuff would like you to buy a lot of it. Not needed. What does work really well is acoustic foam. It cancels the annoying high frequency noises that drown out sound. Once you nail down the trunk rattle, try putting foam behind the door panels. Very light and makes a big difference. Hint: Go to an aircraft upholstery shop. They use this stuff on custom jets and will cut and sell you pieces for not too much money. Good Luck. Also, you won't need a huge amp to overcome all the noise.

Pretty much all rattling issues are discussed here. The S2k is pretty well constructed otherwise. I did not need any sound damping material for the trunk. I did use the dynomat door kit for the fronts.
Good luck!
