It's to do with supply and demand. There is only so much capacity for refining diesel. As demand has risen in recent years, the price has risen accordingly. If demand increases massively overnight with all merchant shipping using it, then the price will rise. This will affect diesel and not petrol. The fuel shipping currently uses is refined from the same crude, so the price of a barrel of crude won't increase but the price of specific fuels will.
I'd laugh cos I fecking hate diesels.

my Dad just sold his canal boat. good timing since canal boat diesel was half the price of car diesel but very soon the benefit is being lifted and it will be car prices for canal boats too.. not that this will impact things but a trend..
