Whine During a Narrow Speed Range (40mph-60mph)
I've noticed that I have a whine during a particular speed range. This occurs from 40-60mph. Beyond 60mph, it stops almost immediately. It's not specific to a gear as it occurs in both 5th and 6th.
Does this sound like a differential problem? I've ridden in another vehicle with differential ring and pinion gears installed with too little slack and the sound is similar. It's less audible in the S2000, but it's still noticeable with the windows down and moreso with the cabin sealed. I'm just confused as to why it stops making noise above 60mph while the other vehicle I'm referring to only increased in volume as speed increased.
It's under warranty, but it will be a while before I can make a trip to the dealer and leave it there, so I don't want to go through the hassle if there's a fix I can do myself.
I don't think it's the shifter "ring" since it doesn't go away when I move the shifter. It also seems to be coming from the rear, but I have a hard time placing the source of the sound.
Thanks.

Are you the original owner? A previous owner may have installed and aftermarket ring & pinion gear.
You may be able to tell if you have non-oem gears by to look at your rpm at speed. Assuming you have stock wheel & tire size, at 50mph you should be turning 4000rpm in 4th gear in an ap2.
