king kong and chickdr - I know exactly what the Boxster is about, I've driven them. I've also driven a Porsche GT2 with twin 30s. However, I just like the feeling of the S2k much better. The suspension is firmer and more responsive in the S2k, the shifter is much more precise, I like the gearing better, etc. Boxsters are also a pain in the ass to work on. I should know, the shop next to mine specializes in Porsches and Ferraris. My neighbor is Ed Pimm, who has raced Porsches competitively for years. I grew up watching Ed work on Porsches. Call me an idiot when you have 10 years of firsthand experience with German cars and horizontally opposed motors. Oh BTW, the shop I work at right now specializes in STIs.

It isn't a dealership, it's a shop. It's called CSN Motorsports. They work on Porsches, Lambos, Ferraris, and the occasional Lotus, Viper, or Z06.

An "entry level" Porsche is still a Porsche and the Boxster in ANY form is a fabulous car. A true mid-engined, perfectly balanced machine. Read the reviews. Can you find a bad one? It is universally regarded as one of the best handling cars on the planet. No, it is not a dragster(nor is the S2K). Buy a Mustang GT if you want that type of car. The Boxster does everything well- it is all about BALANCE...
My first "real" job was as a valet while in college in good ol' wealthy south OC. I drove a *lot* of porsches of all types. They were fun, but after driving the nth one, a lot of the lower entry ones got kind of boring, and their suspensions never wowed me as much as an S2000. Yeah, I wasn't driving them hard, but the valet lot was a fair distance from the drop off zone, and you can get a decent feel for the suspension on simple 90 degree intersection turns.

But yeah, it's still a porsche, and if you want a little more pampering at the cost of a little fun, the porsche is a good bet.

Folks, can we avoid the blatant flaming. Don't make me close down your discussion because of bad behavior, K?

And why would you say that? You do realize the 2007 2.7l car is only 5hp shy of the 1st generation 3.2l "S" model?(and that is with the new hp ratings so they are actually probably identical as far as hp is concerned). The 6-sp in the S is also a bit of a deal killer at least in the original car as it was designed for the Carerra. To save money they put it unchanged into the Boxster S even though the motor is quite different. Many have said the 2.7's 5-sp is better as it was designed specifically for the Boxster.

IMHO a lot of the folks that dump on the "base" Boxster do so because of the S. Just because Porsche makes a Boxster S does not mean they neglected the base car.

I bought the S2000 not because I feel its a better car statistically (hp, speed, etc), it just looks better and is cheaper.

At the time I could care less if it were faster ot not. I didnt find it attractive.

Since then it has grown on me a little. In reality though any convertable made has grown on me. Yes even the 2000's MR2 spyders which i swore were hideous before.

I think the best advice you can get is , assuming you can afford both + maint. , drive both. The choice will make itself.

Just an update for you guys... Looks like the S2000 might have won out. Don't own it yet and I can still back out. Haven't even seen it yet but purchased a 2005 black on black s2k with 17k on the clock at auction through the dealership I work for. Supposedly a clean no paintowrk car. You guys wondering about the wholesale value of these things? Paid $17,500. If it doesn't live up to my high standards I'll pass and let them sell it at the dealership. I'm excited for a new toy. Will keep you guys posted.

I thought about buying a boxster when purchased my s2k... I spent about a year thinking about it... researching both cars... as well as the Z4 3.0si and 2008 Audi TT (hey u guys, quit laughing... it's a good car!). The choice was eventually down to a s2k or boxster s. I priced out the boxter s with the options I wanted and it came out to a little over $60k before tax/title/etc... I could have purchased it, but after paying the $1500/month payment as well as my mortgage, property taxes, homeowners insurance, 403b/457 contributions, etc... it would have left very little $ for other things... like vacations.

But, it IS a great car... esp the 2007 Boxster S with 295hp engine from the Cayman S. Heck even a 2005 with 280hp is a pretty fast and agile car... I've only test drove em... never really DROVE them... but every review from Road & Track, Motor Trend, Car and Driver, etc seems to come up with the same conclusions... one of the best handling/well balance cars in the world. If money were no object, I would have probably bought one. But hey, this is the real world, and I'm not a rich guy.

So, I bought my s2k $5100 below MSRP (<$30k) which is less than half the price of a new Boxster S. I don't regret the decision one bit. Heck, 50% the price with about 95% of the fun. The S2k is truly a fun car to drive... very engaging. If you're looking for a driver's car... the s2k is great. If your looking for a comfortable drop top to cruise around in... get a 2008 TT. B4 you guys start flaming me about the new TT... go drive it and look at it in person. It looks great inside and out and the quality of materials is second to none. The s2k is still a better drivers car. If money is no object, then drop $60k on a 2007 Boxster S or even $42k on a used 2005 Boxster S (still a great car).

Anyway, that's just my opinion on roadsters available at this time.
