[QUOTE=DawnLang,Aug 30 2007, 12:18 PM] the reason i've given mine up is because of the sheer amount of RMS (Rear Main Seal) issues that Porsche dealers here wouldn't pay out for and over here that particular job works out to approximately

Have you ever owned a German car before? Nothing against the Germans, My ancestors are all from Germany, however there is NO WAY I could ever allow myself to buy a German car EVER again. If you are looking for something to keep for a long time then you should probably consider reliability (Honda)

Just an update for you guys... Looks like the S2000 might have won out. Don't own it yet and I can still back out. Haven't even seen it yet but purchased a 2005 black on black s2k with 17k on the clock at auction through the dealership I work for. Supposedly a clean no paintowrk car. You guys wondering about the wholesale value of these things? Paid $17,500. If it doesn't live up to my high standards I'll pass and let them sell it at the dealership. I'm excited for a new toy. Will keep you guys posted.
17.5k?? That is a good deal, assuming the car really is in clean condition.

When i was shopping around for a car, i test drove a boxter, boxter s, Z4 and the s2000.

-In both boxters I could smell the clutch by the time I got back to the dealership. I have been driving manuals for 2 decades now and never had that problem before..... I LOVED the H6 right behind the driver as well as the 2 trunks. Interior was way nice on both.

-The Z4.... LOL forget about it. I sat in it and declined the offer to test drive. Talk about a disappointing interior (cheap and ugly IMO)

-Then, there was the S. I drove an AP1 and an AP2. I didn't care which one I got, just found the best deal and got it.

With Honda's track record for reliability, and porsche's lack thereof, I went with the Honda. (The base boxter and my AP1 were the same $$ for about the same miles)

Funny to hear that Porsche has RMS problems, because even the old school VW's were plagued in that dept. Cmon Germans, get it in gear!

And why would you say that? You do realize the 2007 2.7l car is only 5hp shy of the 1st generation 3.2l "S" model?(and that is with the new hp ratings so they are actually probably identical as far as hp is concerned). The 6-sp in the S is also a bit of a deal killer at least in the original car as it was designed for the Carerra. To save money they put it unchanged into the Boxster S even though the motor is quite different. Many have said the 2.7's 5-sp is better as it was designed specifically for the Boxster.

IMHO a lot of the folks that dump on the "base" Boxster do so because of the S. Just because Porsche makes a Boxster S does not mean they neglected the base car.
No, I think people dump on the base Boxster because originally it was a pretty sad car.

It may be great now but it's hard to shake a reputation. Just look at the Corvair; GM fixed the suspension and people still think all of them are unsafe.

I think S2000s are one of the last pure sports cars on the market. However, if we're going to be honest here, the Boxter is the all around better car. I can't speak for which one is more fun to drive as I haven't driven the latest boxter, only the original (which I didn't like). From what I've read and heard from my father (who just bought a 911 turbo), the new boxter is incredibly fun to drive. Plus, I'm a big Porsche fan.

With that said, The Boxter is sinfully ugly. I just can't get over that.

I've owned a string of Porsches including a water cooled 996. As mentioned the water cooled cars have their share of issues. I also owned an NSX and they are not without issues.

How do I compare my 07 S2000? It is a great car. Feels a lot like the older 911's. The S is much more involving on a run through the back roads. On the road the S2000 is more fun to me and that is the most important piece of the puzzle. I do not like the look of the Boxster and that is a personal thing.

It was a pretty sad car? It got rave reviews from the get go. Even with "only" a 201hp 2.5 H6 it ran to 60 in 6 sec(a pretty good figure for a 1997 car). It has gotten better with each revision. Sure it has had issues with slipped cylinder liners(now a thing of the past) and RMS issues(mine had none in 4 yrs and many never have an issue) but every car has its weak points(the diff in the S2K for example).

i have an 00 s2k and my brother has a 99 boxster base. what a disappointment! i understand that i am much more used to my car than anybody else's, but the porsche to me seems very numb in my opinion. it is without a doubt a very gorgeous car, and definitely more comfortable than my s2k. however, it lacks severely in drivability to me. although i am fairly confident that it stops and turns much better than my car does, it somehow never really 'feels' like it. the heaviness and the solidness of the car that everbody talks about is definitely there, but to me it feels more like a downfall. my s2k is 10x's more responsive to what i do in terms of acceleration and turning stability. throttle response is much snappier on the s2k (even though i do make much less torque!). i feel like i'm driving a snappy go kart in the s2k, and a shrunken down lexus in the boxster. just my .02.

Your point was that the current base Boxster is almost as powerful as the original Boxster S, and therefore is respectable. Now you're trying to say that the original base Boxster has respectable performance? Which is it?

If you're going to be impressed with the original base Boxster, then there's a whole lot of people that are going to disagree with you.
