hell, i never even launched this last one and tore it all to hell. I took off from about 4500 rpms to get across traffic. I didnt even hit 2nd gear. EVERY tooth on the pinion gear had deep cracks through it.

If i had 600hp then it might be a different story, but I have 230hp... there is no reason this should break other that honda made a shitty ass diff.
that'll do it... you dont launch the car from 4500... there are things you do and don't do in an S2000. Launching at 4500 is one of them. Before I purchased my S2000 I did NOTHING but research. I read up on the diff, the "snap over steer", tires, brakes, maintenance... I spent hours a day on this forum learning what I needed to do. And 4500 rpm launches is a big NO.

it wasnt really a launch.. it was a get across traffic, it should not have broken the diff. It rolled off the line, nothing abrupt, etc.

i have NEVER heard of another RWD car that had a diff this fragile.

hell this diff uses the same gear as a TT RX7, I have launched those cars with hundreds more hp and radials and never broken a gear.

a ford 7.5inch rear end can hold 400hp in a heavy ass t-bird on drag radials w/o breaking.

an r200 diff has a 7.8inch ring gear, those dont break.

you buy an s2000 knowing that sooner or later the rear end is going to give up, its just a matter of time

I agree. I hear to many stories of s2000's diff messing up. So everything else in this car was built to last but the differential is so delicate. Honda made a crappy diff for the S.

I would have to think this is true.

I can't imagine that 1 drop from 4500 would kill the diff. Anyone have a documented instance with a basically babied car that happened to do 1 drop and kill it?

i never said i babied it, but i never launched it.

point is, i'm NOT going to baby the car, and we shouldnt be FORCED to baby a SPORTS car for fear of the rear end.

what other sports car have you ever heard of with this many issues related to the rear end.

the fact that we know its a problem does not make it OK

for me my cousin tried to do a 1st 2nd gear chirp and thats when it broke. from what i know the car was used as a daily from the previous owner, and i bought it at about 130k miles.
When i looked at it the mounts were bad,so im guessing that lead to the diff breaking

I have 78k miles total, 45k boosted (340 whp) and my diff is still healthy. The car is hardly babied - gets thrashed on regularly.

FWIW - I never attempted to do a burn-out, although the tires have let loose on aggresive acceleration. I have never attempted to chirp the tires on a gear change, although it happens quite frequently just from aggressive driving.

Perhaps some diffs are weaker than others, perhaps some drivers are harder on them than others.
