Default Not Owner (Yet) - Bay Area, CA

Hi Everyone!

I'm from the Bay Area and have wanted an S2k for basically my whole life. I'll be ready to purchase in a few months. I have a few questions and was hoping I can build some connections and resources so I can keep the car healthy and make visual modifications. There's a lot of good info here.

I also want to know people's experience buying from private seller vs used car dealer. If you know which sub-forums to point me to that'd be great! If not... I'll figure it out.

Lastly... does anyone know how to change your username? I logged in with FB and can't access my profile. Not sure how to delete my account to remake without connecting FB too...

Thanks for the help!!

Welcome. I'd just make a new account. I prefer buying from private seller as they usually know history of car especially if theres only a couple owners.

I have learned a lot being a S2k owner in the bay. 1st thing to share would be wait man. Waiting for the right car will be key. It's ok to be picky
There are a few cars on the market right now I would down right avoid. Craigslist, Facebook the main 2 places to look.
I wouldn't touch anything from a dealer unless you want to throw money away but know a lot of the private sellers or collectors are price gouging right now
The best time to buy an S2000 will be in winter if you can wait for the prices to drop a bit more and they will.

I would get a price range, car you you want AP1 or AP2, and know that there are some great shops in the area that can get your car running perfect. It's also a very fun car to work on
There are tons of great helpful you tube videos about the car. Just take you time and really look around ask questions and enjoy your stay.

Hey man i'm also in the Bay Area! Welcome! I am also available for any questions you may have. I would highly recommend joining the Norcal S2k facebook group if you havnt already as there is a lot of good information in that group. Also a few people have been selling their cars on the group and there have been some great examples and builds to take advantage of if you like.

What requirements do you have for the car that you want? Color? mileage? Stock or not?

I prefer dealing with private parties as to avoid shady dealer sales tactics. Plus there is the added benefit of maintenance history knowledge. I've owned my S for fifteen years now and still stay in touch with my car's previous owner and have asked him many questions over the years that I would not have been able to had I gone through a traditional purchase from a dealer.

There is a two-week probation period for new users. This is to ward off scammers and spambots. However, it means you won't be able to access any profiles (including your own) or use the private message feature for two weeks. You can bypass this probation period by purchasing a membership. Instructions on changing your username can be found in Site Info (https://www.s2ki.com/forums/site-inf...n-name-575045/).

HI Alex,

I'm on the other side of the coin-- about to sell my beloved AP1. I bought it in 2002. It has never been driven in the rain, always garaged in Santa Barbara, and I have been the sole driver.

It has 40,121 original miles, no accidents, and I had a Carfax run this week--clean, of course.

A few months ago I had a new top with the glass window kit installed. I ran Carfax this week and it's clean. If you'd like to talk to me, call me 805 692 0025 or cell 805 689 2018

Buying a S2000:

1. Have a lockable garage for storage.
2. Have a daily driver in addition to the S2000.
3. Pay cash.

Nah it all depends where you live in teh Bay Area. My S2000 was my daily driver for the better part of a year and it was parked outside in my apartment complex all the time. While i wont ever recommend against storing it in a garage. it all really depends where you live.

Hi, Alex; I'm in pretty much the same position as you. I just moved to East Bay from out of state and am strongly considering getting an s2k. I really wanted a turbo, but I'm learning that's apparently pretty tough out here!
