Default Thinking about getting an s2k..

Just wondering if this is a common problem with the s2k? I live in a pretty good neighborhood.. except getting my bike stolen out of a friend's garage a few years back, but I live in a gated community so anyone inside is probably someone who lives in the community. Anyway, I'll be going off to college next year so the car will probably be left at home, and the year after that I'll probably live off campus and drive it around there, which will be the city of Irvine if I make it into UCI haha. Back to the point.. is the "soft top getting knifed" a common problem with s2k owners, like something I should constantly worry about? Or is it not so common as I think it to be? Irvine is a pretty nice city, but just because the city is nice doesn't mean the students at the college will be.. or they could be, I dunno?

It's not a common problem, but it is something to think about. It doesn't matter where you live, it takes seconds to knife a soft top and only a few more minutes to steal seats. This could be done while your at a mall or in school. You always have the risk of a thief following you home also. If your worried, I would invest in a hardtop.

you're going to be in irvine....come on, nothing happens there (coming from a former UCI student haha). your car will be fine, just make sure you lock it up and dont leave it in shady areas. i do remember a random spree of civics getting stolen my soph or jr year but thats it.

irvine cops have nothing else to do but drive around the college community and ticket you for every little thing wrong with your car. in 4yrs there i got pulled over 6 times and got my hood popped twice...i would be more worried about that than your top getting sliced.

I'm trying to visualize this. So they slice the top, and from there just pull down both latches to remove the top by hand?

I couldn't drive this car with a hard top.

Welcome, the top slashing is not all that common as an overall percentage...but it can happen. Just be aware of your car's surroundings.

They slice the top so they can jump into the car. You can't manually pull the top down unless you disconnect a fuse. Once you can get a hand through the top you can easily open a door. The only issue would be though is if a car has an alarm.

A hardtop won't really improve the security of your vehicle -- especially if thieves aren't hesitant to smash windows as they are around here.

True. can't stop a thief when they really want something.
