Default AEM EMS

My AP1 is on the higher modded side, upped compression, stage 3 cams and a whole bunch of other goodies (missing ITB's and a Stroker however). Soon enough the car will be broken in (being done so with the stock ecu and reving only to 3500 rpm), and looking to slap on a AEM EMS. Never have used these before and my mechanic is quite confident. My problem is the car is somewhat of a part time daily driver and I am worried about the tuning at partial throttle. I believe the AEM unit has a self learning/adjusting ability but how does this work. someone give me some guidance on this one.

The AEM EMS will come shipped with basemaps that you must install. Street tuning of your part-throttle settings is a must, as well as dyno tuning the WOT stuff. Your fuel and timing maps are laid out in grid form, with load being the dependant variable, and rpm's being the independant variable. You can configure how much of a % each cell is allowed to deviate, or "learn", from the cell value, but you need to drive around and find the sweet spot for each cell. Basically, on your tuning screen, you'll see your AFR and your o2#1 FB value. This FB value is the % added or subtracted, by the computer, to each cell, to maintain the AFR setpoint for that cell. I have set my EMS to not stray more than +/- 10%. If while tuning, my fb value for a particular cell is showing +10.16 (my max value it's allowed to add), then I add fuel until that FB value gets closer to 0. You want to set up each cell so that the FB value is somewhere around 0 in each cell. The same goes is it states -10.16%...take out fuel until it gets close to 0.

Timing I would leave alone unless you really know what you're doing. I've been able to manipulate my timing quite alot, but running ITB's allows for a much cooler, denser air charge, so I can run more timing than most.

I will not be adjusting timing unless I really have problems with the cams. I am more or less looking to learn alot more about AEM EMS within the next 6 months before I need to truly start working it. Right now, I am a lost soul..

You will need to have the timing adjusted to make any power off the base map. AEMs base maps are just that, base maps. They are very conservative. If I remember correctly at WOT from 6000 up they only have timing set at 24 degrees. Most NA cars that I have tuned are over 30.

Alot of people here have personal experiance with AEM EMS on s2k.... which is what he has a question about.

If you just email AEM you might not get the real life answers he is seeking......

AEM has an online forum, quite similar to this one. I suggest you go check it out. If you can score a copy of the AEMpro software, I'll shoot you over the 1.19 basemap, and my 1.19 workmap of my tuned car when it was stock...maybe even my ITB maps so you can see what changes have been made and such. The software is very user friendly.
