don't see how you could say there is no way to drive anything but the R33 when I've seen many R32's a a couple R34's on the streets around here.

There was a guy I knew in Murfreesboro, TN that had an R34 Skyline. He had his imported from Japan when he came to the US. I have no idea how he did it, but I have seen it done.

Keep in mind that the Skylines are only right hand drive

Nope. Europe had LHD ones. Very rare from what I hear.

Anybody know where I can find some information regarding importing a R34 GTR Vspec I into the US? I already have one in another country and I plan to ship it over as soon as I can find a way to legalize the car. I need to do it right so I can actually use this car in the US, and not have it impounded and crushed.

I want this to be a LEGAL street driven car. Not a "kit car", "show car", or "race car". The car will be driven mainly in the east coast, it will probably never need to be driven in California. Lastly, is it possible to import this back out of the US?

If any of you guys have any information or know who I can get in contact with, that will be wonderful.

Thanks in advance...
It is completely impossible to legitimately legalize an R34 GT-R. This is due to the simple fact that even when you go through a legal RI, converted the odometer to miles, convert the speedo to MPH, install all unnecessary crash beams, insure all the glass is DOT, modify the headlights so they do not blind on coming traffic, Add the necessary catalytic converters to pass EPA testing, etc. The vehicle still will not have OBDII. Any vehicle imported or to be used on the street in the United States built in 1996 or later is required to have OBDII. There is no simple or inexpensive way to accomplish this. Motorex attempted to retrofit a 1996 300ZX TT engine management system but this never came to fruition. For a later poster, RHD has no bearing on legality for any car imported to the US so long as it conforms to the regulations. A good friend of mine was responsible for the original DOT petition to bring in the cars initially back in 98-99 and was successful until Motorex screwed the pooch. DOT is extremely weary about GT-R importation because towards the end of Motorex's existence, they were releasing cars to customers that were not completely converted. Whether this was to hold more profit or simple laziness I do not know. If you do pursue this legally you will likely get screwed. Your only realistic option is to use a loophole and just drive the car with a dealer plate, kit car title, etc. But all of these are gray and in an accident or theft scenario you will have little to no recourse and likely get yourself into some minor Federal trouble (if there is such a thing.)

Nissan never built a LHD GT-R. Any LHD GT-Rs were converted after market. The biggest reason is the turbochargers and manifold, etc. have to be heavily modified to allow for the steering shaft, master cylinder, etc.

I have personally seen a blue R33 with white Volk TE37's up in an Albany, NY car show I entered into about 4 years ago. I'm pretty sure he was from NYC and there was also this silver R32 for sale on heavythrottle.com located in Poughkeepsie, NY about 6 months ago or so. So I know they do exist in NY state.

Best of luck Giff, follow your dreams man!

Interesting...

Is the process the same with all makes being imported into the US?

U seem to see/hear about more CTRs and ITRs from overseas making into the states legally...

What I think is funny is the emissions guidelines and regulations of importing vehicles in...

There is no completely legitimate way to import a R34 GT-R for road use by a US citizen period. That said, there are plenty of people driving GT-Rs and other gray market import JDM vehicles in the US with real plates. It really comes down to how far you are willing to bend federal law.
