Bouncing RPMs
So i found a couple of things in my engine bay today that baffled me. First off, my CAI was not connected! Ha. But that was fixed, but then i found a small 1/4'' hose at the front of the engine towards the bottom on the driver's side that was loose from a small black box. There are three hose connection ports in which you can connect hoses to. One which already had a hose connected. One had nothing on it which was directly next to the first, and a third which had a piece of the hose which had apparently snapped off, still on it. So i put the hose back on the port with the rubber stub and tonight when i started the car up, i waited until i had two bars on the temp gauge and then drove. Once i came to my first stop sign (i never passed 2nd gear to get there) i had the clutch in and i was in neutral and the RPMs bounced from 1000 to 3500. But once i put it into first with the clutch still in it stopped. When i brought it back to neutral it bounced again. Then i drove it to the 7-11 and pulled that hose off and it stopped happening. Then after it warmed up some more i put the hose back on and it didnt do it. So i dont know what to think. Any suggestions. Or should i just take it easy until saturday and then you S2K guru's can look at my messed up baby? Peace. TIA

post this in the under the hood section on th emain page. you'll have better luck.
You are over my head on this one.
I think I have an idea of what you are dealing with but I have no idea why it would affect a rough idle.
I suggest you go back to your CAI install instructions and make sure the vacuum hose routing you have going is correct.
I'll leave this thread here through the day to see if any other Mid-A'ers can help you. If not, I'll move it to UTH.
It's your vacuum hoses and secondary air pump. The small little black box you speak of, (if we are on the right page here) should have been connected by a bolt to your CAI, with a couple hoses connect to it. Those hoses should be connected to your intake manifold (or in and around that area under the cover that hides the fuel rail, I don't quite remember exactly). Make sure they are connected properly.
Dylan's correct, there's a CAI install thread in the Under The Hood forum. When you connected the hoses (correctly I'll assume), the ECU needs to "relearn" your driving habits. This bouncing RPMs is also common in changes in weather and you should let your car warm up before starting to drive. In about 100 miles it shouldn't happen anymore.
