Carmax is a hit or miss. Sometimes they give you a ridiculously good trade in value, and sometimes they lowball you like crazy. It's worth a shot though, and my friend and I have taken many cars there as a baseline.

I have two worthwhile experiences to share regarding CarMax:

- I purchased my S2000 from CarMax with 3000 miles on the odo -- best auto purchase experience I've had.

- I brought in a 'mint' [8 months] Honda Civic about 10 years back for a purchase quote (as you're getting ready to do). During their 'X-point inspection', a genius around back folded my hood in half because he attempted to pull it down without first removing the hood prop . To CarMax's credit, they purchased a new hood & had local Honda shop color match it, etc.

Thanks.Good to hear they took car of your car. The sale is going to be a PITA since i don't have the title, so it seems easiest to do if i sell it to a dealer.

they will lowball the shit out of you trust me. the reason they're so big is because they'll write you a check within an hour of your arrival at their facility with your car. the quick, no-hassle money combined with the fact that most people don't know shit about their cars is what gets them business.

last year i took my 06 Civic Si to them with navi, optional dealer-installed Pilot Exalto PE2 summer tires, and the body and paint was in near-mint condition. the car was 100% stock with 12,000miles on the odo. they offered $17,000. my dad took it to jim coleman toyota and got $20k for it as a trade in for my sister's TSX.

...but what dealership isn't going to lowball you.

I've never sold a car to Carmax, but I purchased my old Sunfire from the Carmax in Laurel, MD. It was not a good experience (borderline fraudulent in my opinion) and I will never buy another car from Carmax again... although that doesn't help answer the OP's question
