Well the "if its not original, it's illegal" thing is BS. If you fo to meineke and get a replacement muffler, its not OEM and its legal.

Has anyone in MD actually GOTTEN a ticked for an exhaust? Every time I've heard a cop say something its always been "I'll give you a warning for the exhaust, its illegal" but I've never seen a ticket for it??

Are there any local law enforcement officials on the board that could help us out? I'd like to know exactly what makes a non-OEM meineke muffler more legal than the Tanabe on Fed's. (the only thing I could think of would be a noise level, but I'm pretty sure there is no noise level law concerning exhausts on the books)

I would have let him hear it again when I pulled away!

Did he happen to comment on the other 8 cars?
I was actually stopped at a red light, the light turned green, and I started off, didn't get faster than 30 mph, saw a car swithc 3 lanes in traffic to get dbehind me. I immediately knew what was going on. I saw him in my rearview mirror running my plates, and a bout a block later turned the lights on. He walked over, and told me that he pulled me over for having an illegal exhaust, then ran to the fron of the car, and checked to see if I had a front plate. The whole time I was laughing on the inside, and had a huge grin on my face. He told me to sit in the car and wait. 15 minutes later he comes back out, and asks me if I bought it in MD, still with a grin in my face I said, yes, bought it and installed it in MD, He then goes to the back and looks at the exhaust again, comes back and asks me if it always had dual exhaust, to which I answered came that way from the factory all with a grin on my face. What amused me even more was when he proceeded to say " I have a feeling you're bullshitting me, and you just think this is a big joke." At that point, I said, what do you want me to say? I don't have a front plate and you say my exhaust is ilklegal. Nothing I can do. He left and came back 15 minutes later with a ticket for the no front plate, and a verbal warning for the exhaust.

the thing is, it doesn't say it has to be comparable to YOUR OWN CAR's stock exhaust, just a stock exhaust in good working order. my argument before the court (even though the judge dismissed my case, i still addressed the court) was that there are TONS of cars/trucks/bikes with considerably louder exhausts out there FROM THE FACTORY. this law is such BS and cannot be enforced properly without a decibel meter and current readings for all stock exhausts. anything less than that and i would fight it.

from what i remember about this law is that they have to have a decibal meter inorder to give you a ticket. there is a max decibal for your exhaust i'm sure someone in the california board could give you the answer because they are very strict out there about it. and simmilarly there is a decibal level for driving in your car which isn't being inforced very well either, but there is a law. i would find a traffic lawyer and get a consultation, sure it may cost a bit more but it could prevent it from ever happening again sence hopefully you will learn how to fight it.

How come Harley riders NEVER get pulled over for their exhausts? Ask the cops that, or ask Peter (4theheckof_it) a former cop.
