Illegal exhaust in MD?
Well the "if its not original, it's illegal" thing is BS. If you fo to meineke and get a replacement muffler, its not OEM and its legal.
Has anyone in MD actually GOTTEN a ticked for an exhaust? Every time I've heard a cop say something its always been "I'll give you a warning for the exhaust, its illegal" but I've never seen a ticket for it??
Are there any local law enforcement officials on the board that could help us out? I'd like to know exactly what makes a non-OEM meineke muffler more legal than the Tanabe on Fed's. (the only thing I could think of would be a noise level, but I'm pretty sure there is no noise level law concerning exhausts on the books)

I would have let him hear it again when I pulled away!
Did he happen to comment on the other 8 cars?
the thing is, it doesn't say it has to be comparable to YOUR OWN CAR's stock exhaust, just a stock exhaust in good working order. my argument before the court (even though the judge dismissed my case, i still addressed the court) was that there are TONS of cars/trucks/bikes with considerably louder exhausts out there FROM THE FACTORY. this law is such BS and cannot be enforced properly without a decibel meter and current readings for all stock exhausts. anything less than that and i would fight it.
from what i remember about this law is that they have to have a decibal meter inorder to give you a ticket. there is a max decibal for your exhaust i'm sure someone in the california board could give you the answer because they are very strict out there about it. and simmilarly there is a decibal level for driving in your car which isn't being inforced very well either, but there is a law. i would find a traffic lawyer and get a consultation, sure it may cost a bit more but it could prevent it from ever happening again sence hopefully you will learn how to fight it.

always worth a shot
