my 2 cents:

Ive beent running a probe gt (mazda 4cyl turbo) with nothing after the cat, for well over a year now. Ive gotten pulled over once for 41 in a 25 and he let me go because i truthfully said i thought it was a 40 zone. The cop never mentioned anything about the noise, and he definately saw the A/F and boost gauges when he was at my window. Keep in mind the thing is hella loud, louder than most trucks.

I was driving the probe last night a 1:30 am because i wanted to transport a bed in the hatchback, a state trooper followed me through a residential neighborhood and onto the highway , keeping about 10ft between his front and my back. In the end he just pulled away after about a mile of following me.

I think you only get pulled over if you are doing somthing reckless. Many times ive passed cops at speeds well above the speed limit and they havnt pulled me over (1 time in my life, knock on wood). I really think it depends a lot on how much control it appear that you have over the car, also i never brake when i see a cop if im speeding, i just downshift and slow down gradually, i think the red brakelight attracts attention to the car.

totally. i've known people that got pulled over and the cop actually said your front end really dove down when you hit the brakes so you were going alot faster than i clocked you at, before you saw me.

i was pulled on rt. 50 for no reason other than my exhaust. keep in mind it was a 45 mph zone with light traffic at night, and i was being very conservative with everything KNOWING i was being tailed. he followed me from around 7100 until rt. 28 where he stopped me at the Damons. i knew exactly why he stopped me because i had done nothing wrong. sure enough, illegal exhaust modification.

guess what? the judge asked if i had gotten it 'fixed'. i said yes, and he said case dismissed. no paperwork, no proof, nothing. by 'fixed' i meant i had put on the fujitsubo, so i wasn't lying per se, but i sure could have been.

i then proceeded to address the court ANYWAY, stating what i went in there prepared to say: that having terms like 'exhaust noise' and 'loudness' are overly vague terms, and that there are many passenger vehicles out there in stock form that are louder. the judge made a snide remark about glass packs on his chevy when he was younger, and i turned and left. basically, it depends on the judge - end of story.

ps- i watched him dismiss at least 5 others similarly that day, all but 1 from the same officer as me (officer Jenkins).

It very much depends on the judge, certain judges are consistently hard on certain crimes, and other judges are consitently hard on certain other crimes.

But also getting back to the point of this thread, which is about illegality of exhausts, the S2000 responds weakly to breather mods, the car is already highly tuned from the factory, the most hp/litre of any production engine, with millions of dollars poured into research, and you think that you can make abig difference by adding some headers or exhaust? The biggest difference from an aftermarket exhaust is the noise, and thats what attracts cops.

But to quote my friend "an exhaust is a signature mod" and its often the first thing that people do to their cars, because it makes them feel like they are unique. I say that driving an s2000 makes you unique, dont waste your money and potentially lose you license because you wanted to make more noise.

Dont you think the stock S sounds beautiful anyways? I do.

Your post gets the from me. Driving a S2000 does make you unique, but the most fun I've had with my car is in the modificaitons. I especially love the aftermarket exhaust notes on this car. Anything to make that whining motor louder

Or to sit in the gravel pit before the Dragon and here over 100 S2000's with different aftermarket exhausts take off

Or to drive through a tunnel with a group of non-stock S2000's. Or to follow a better driver than yourself and be able to know when to stay on and let off the gas because you can hear what he/she is doing ahead of you. I can go on and on.

The only thing going against the aftermarket exhaust on a S2000 is the $50 ticket that doesn't even go on my driving record, so big whooping deal
