Bethesda area ..... near McLean, in DC proper at the Navy Yard, or down closer to Belvoir. ........Arlington or Alexandria county for a place to live. Unless of course I know for a fact it will be Belvoir .... Lorton or Woodbridge area.
You are all over the board here ..... I'd try to get the bosses to tell you where you are going to work before deciding on where to live. The commute CAN be a bear and $$$$ even if you use metro ...

^ I agree - huge difference in traffic/etc between the Navy Yard and Fort Belvoir. For your sake, I hope it's not Fort Belvoir, unless you plan to live near there. Horrendous commute. My +1 and I live in Rosslyn (Arlington, right across the river from Georgetown) and we take the Metro to work. I work downtown near Capitol Hill, and he works at Crystal City (Navy), but also is frequently at the Pentagon and the Navy Yard. As Ken said, find out exactly where you will be working before you decide on where to live. Bring the S, but try to garage it. Good luck!

I say bring it....theft is theft. If they want your car or something in it, they'll do whatever it takes to get it. All you can do is slow them down with your pedal club, alarms...etc.

Don't live in Woodbridge area if you are planning on having a nice commute. Traffic is a BITCH on 95 any time, any day...I used to commute from there to College Park, MD. Worst time of my life.

I say look around Arlington, Shirlington, or maybe Ballston area. Alexandria isn't so bad either, they have some really nice apartments/condos near Pentagon City/Del Ray.

I know the stated options are pretty spread out, but that is all I have to go on at the moment. I am waiting to hear where exactly I will be working. As of right now I am hoping it will be at WNY, and that way I will most likely be looking to live in Arlington or Alexandria. But we shall see. The AF has a way of ****** these things up.

That sucks!

Comparing DC to Hawaii is like comparing Hell to Heaven.

Be careful in PG County.
Fair enough -- but for the cost of a studio apartment in Bethesda, he could get a house w/2-car garage and a Vulcan mounted on the roof here in PG.

The poster who says nail down the work location first is right on. "Greater DC" is basically three (or more) different regions.

Bupton - i'm guessing you'll get temp housing for the first 30 days or so when you get out here? and your stuff isn't going to arrive immediately either right?

Once you figure out where you'll be, let us know.. there are pros and cons to every neighborhood out here. I think the major issue is ultimately going to center around what your commute to work will be
