Summit to Require Roll Bar Next Year

BMWs in general are nowhere near as reliable as our Honda S2000, and parts tend to be much more expensive.
But I don't think you can beat the Miata as an entry level track car. They're cheap, reliable, there's tons of go-fast parts for them, and lots of people know how to set them up and keep them track ready. You'll always have a group to run with at almost any track event.

Why would being attached to the floorboard intead of the shelf make it any less of a concern?

I don't understand that. The roll bar is further away from my head than the factory hoops, and that little plastic cover on them isn't worth much, from a head banging perspective. I have both with stock belts. I will be installing six points, to use at the track, but will keep my stock belts for street.
The chances of me rolling on the street are slim enough for me to take that gamble, whether it makes any difference or not. I would say the odds of that are less than being struck by lightning. (Hopkins ;~) )

I cannot remember where I read about someone saying that folks were jumping out of the S to get into bimmers, but here is a response I typed before I realized that it was not in this thread:
Btw, who all has dumped their S2000 in favor of a 3-series? Calvin. Why? Well, maybe it was because there were a few S accidents this year, but he also will have a series to race in next year should he get his race license. He also has friends that are already driving BMW's(and they're good guys
).
Who else? Mani is on that road, but not there yet.

Having had both installed in my car, not simultaneously, I can tell you that the bar on the floor-mounted one sits farther forward than the shelf mounted one. Not much, but some.
Hey Skip, I definetaly want to continue tracking my car next year so I'm looking at roll bars. Any idea on which combo would be good http://www.bethania-garage.com/s2000.htm? I can't afford different seats now, would harnesses work with the stock seats? Maybe get seats at some point, but not anytime soon. Thanks for the help

I have several issues though with the S2000. I don't know if I can find a seat I'd fit in comfortably (38" waist), I'm not sure if I want to track a car I owe money on, I'm not sure if I want to tear apart the interior and lose the functionality of the interior, and I don't like the idea of having to modify a car heavily just to go to the track.
Getting another car with a fixed roof would make it easier. If I got a 325 i'd most likely just do brake pads/fluid, and some decent street tires at first. But then again I don't think I want to deal with the reliability issues and structural weakness of the 325's.
I keep changing my mind with what I want to do every 5 seconds or so, its really frustrating.

). I have always been told "No" to using harnesses with stock seats because of no guides. Rob has run the shoulder straps through the headrests and I cannot remember how he ran the sub belt. ***** DO NOT RUN 4-PT HARNESSES!!! *****All that said, the shoulder strap on one side dug into my neck. It may have been that way because I'm shorter than Rob- dunno. I'm guessing since Rob lives at the track he does not suffer from strap rash.
As for bars, my first HD bar had removable everything... and nothing ever was removed. In light of that, I would most likely suggest a completely welded bar, diagonal and harness. It's also a bit cheaper. You also need to consider how much, if any, of the interior you wish to keep.
Lastly, I'm not an authority on all things bars, but have had a couple of them.

I believe that was this thread? I was thinking about getting a 3-series, and yes I thought about the reasons Calvin is going that way, and they do not pertain to me (since I've done a total of 2 track days).

I understand the financial ramifications if a bad day is had at the track- been there. As for seats, and I'm sure you already know this, you want those puppies snug. I'm a 34" waist and use a Sparco Rev Plus(very narrow seat). After a weekend, I have sore outer thighs from the bolsters... but my arms are not sore like they used to be with stock seats. I can relax and concentrate on inputs versus trying to brace myself. There are a couple of seats that do fit in the S2000 that are a little larger, but may require trimming the shoulder flares.
And I agree with tracking a second car, but remember that without a truck/trailer, a person can only mod so much. compromises have to be made. And you're just like a lot of us with regards to the changing-the-mind thing.
I took the very, very long road(read: expensive) to where I'm at now.

Calvin had an RX-8 to drive on the streets if he needed.

I took the very, very long road(read: expensive) to where I'm at now.I rode in Cale's car last time I was at the track and his seats felt pretty good (as a passenger anyway). Maybe I could just get some of those.
See, now I'm thinking tracking the S next season is the best way to go about it. Tomorrow I'll probably be cruising Auto Trader for some other car.
