Everyone knows we need spending and tax cuts. the point is; what are we spending on? the general statement that a dollar in spending generates a $1.50 in stimulus is just an average. You need to look at each item of spending and ask "what will this generate?" Money to give medicare/medicaid to people on unemployment won't generate 150% stimulus. Maybe that is a good idea, but what is it doing in this package? It should stand for consideration on its own merit in a seperate bill. And even some of the tax changes are social welfare. Included is a $3500 tax "refund" for people who do not even pay income tax! How does that make sense at this time, when we are already carrying the biggest deficet ever?

Steve, the dollars for social programs are huge, not a small portion. Go look on CNN and you will find a break down. Maybe all the social spending is good, but it is not stimulus and it should not be crammed into a bill called the economic recovery and stimulus package. This is misleading.

Not a single republican supports this bill and 12 democrats oppose it. Not only does it not have bi-partisan support, it has bipartisan opposition. If nothing else, that should make you question this thing.

As for the Secty of the treasury, it is hard to believe a guy who is supposed to be as smart as him, whose entire background is in economics and monetary policy, does not know about employment tax. If he doesn't, then why give him the job of Secty. of the Treasury? As for paying back what was beyond the statute of limitations, if you want to be a public figure, you pay what you owe and you don't hide behind technicalities. Let's be honest with each other. If this was a Bush guy you'd be against him.

I don't want to see Obama fail. I don't want to see the country fail. But we all have to look at what is happening and ask ourselves if this makes sense. We didn't elect Obama to be our daddy. We elected him to be president. And the people in congress and the senate are mostly the same old group that were there when we got into this mess. Why would we trust them?

This package should have been a balance of tax breaks, tax incentives for investment in business expansion, spending on infrastructure programs (about 2 to 3 times as much as is in there now), investment in education for areas where we need workers, inventors and problem solvers. All the rest should be in different bills.

Obama had the whole campaign period and the whole president elect period to come up with something that makes sense. This bill includes all his promises for social change strapped on to a sitmulus bill with inadequate stimulus spending.

Personally, I think they should set up a plan to give huge ammounts to everyone who paid taxes last year. The ammount given could be determined by how much you made or paid in taxes.

Lets say they gave each head of houshold $30k or something. Folks would pay their bills, aleviating the credit crisis. Then they would go out and spend on new stuff and new houses. Economy fixed.

heck, I'm gonna run for president in 2011 on that platform
too late

Jerry, I am all for more money thrown into my line of work, who wouldn't be. But I agree with Bill that it belongs in another bill separate from one designed to stimulate the economy.

jeff have you ever even driven a car which burned leaded fuel?

personally I would prefer to see a much larger chunk in direct expenditure in renewable energy development and deployment.
I'm not sure however that in the short term we can spend much though.
The american psyche needs a specific goal that they believe is going to make tomorrow better.

if you look at each period of major growth over the last 100 years it is tied to a psychological phenomena such as the industrial mechanization of the 20's, the post war baby boom, the management revolution of the 60's, the internet age of the 90's.

basically the recovery needs a tag line that the average american can understand and believe is going to make tomorrow better.
So what's the tag line here Jerry? "Don't worry, if you're unemployed, or can't get credit, the government will just borrow what you need?" [/QUOTE]
how about

Hey, I didn;t say that. Jerry did.

If we are going to fix it, let's fix it, not make it worse. One week out of the box and now I see I can't trust Obama.

Money for goverment jobs that have been underfunded in the past are fine. Govenment money for programs that do not create new jobs should be reconsidered elsewhere.

If Obama and congress are concerned that the social welfare aspects would not pass on their own merit, then it is just business as usual to tack them onto the stimulus package that the people support. NO CHANGE!
