GM Volt
I was driving home from CT last night and WBZ's Dan Ray had a long segment on his talk show about the Volt. People seemed very excited, but maybe all the calls were just a set up.
What do you think of the car?

Dan Rea link
turns out the founder of the GM volt cheer leading squad was the guy on with Dan last night and they promoted support.
the volt has a range of 40 miles and a recharge takes 3 hours.
so a trip to Rochester NY would need 10 recharges for 30 hours and driving time of 6 hours.
so a day and a half. and you would basically have to stop at every rest stop on the turnpike.
now imagine how much traffic drives by that rest area that would now need 3 hours of parking.
electric cars might cut it in an urban area... but are totally useless within the context of greater American lifestyle.

It's looking like there will be at least a 40 thousand dollar asking price for it. Would you pay that much for brand new, unproven technology (from GM especially
) when you can buy a car like a Prius with 12 years of reputation, for 24 grand?
No thanks. I'll take the 15 g's and the Toyota reliability.

Like I said I want a Honda FCX Clarity and a hydrogen distribution network.
Has anybody heard about the hearings on minimum noise standards for cars?
People are complaining about hybrids are too quiet and they don't hear them coming.
So they want them to make more noise.

Rochester... We ROC!You hit the nail on the head. I think the Volt is a horrible example of what electric could be though by that 40-miles/3-hour cycle, but in general terms, even if it was 80-miles/3-hours you are right on, it is always going to be just a commuter car.
For me the burning question would be affordability, I would not spend $25k for a car I could only drive to and from work...

Minimum noise standards. Dumbest thing eva!
