Mac or PC
This would be for Chris and Barbara. The old man keeps the low cost Wal-Mart special.
Steve, look at some of the points above and you will see what my problem is with PCs. In a sense, they are like old British sports cars. They run just great if you do all sorts of mainenance. They will run even better and do more if you mod it over time. And that's fine if you like doing maintenance and mods on computers. I hate it!!! I think computers are mere appliances like stoves and refrigerators. I just want to open the box, plug it in, and go. I have no interest in doing clean-ups, or hardware upgrades, or adding new software that didn't come with it in the first place. We are never going to use it for professional level photography or music mixing, so what do I care if the software for photos and music isn't quite as good as some high priced aftermarket software you can buy for a PC? Plus, it seems to me the software in the Mac is about the best you can get for a person like me (and my family) that just wants to start playing with photgraphs, music and video. And all that stuff is already on the Mac. From what I've seen, all the software on the Mac is easier to use and mor eintuitive. Plus, the Apple store has free training for all this stuff.
When I look at what you get, and then think about the cost of some software for the PC, the price difference is not as bad as the initial sticker shock would lead you to believe. But the Macs are still pretty expensive. I'm thinking of getting an iMac for Barbara as she does not need a lap top. That thing is way cool with a huge 20 inch screen on the base model. Plus, no more box under the desk.

I like the fact that PC is more hackable. That means more pirated software available!

never needed to re-install windows on any of my machines - if you keep the machine clean and use some decent cleanup programs and decent spyware PCs will run just fine

I dont have to worry about all that extra crap you have to run on your machine to keep it safe . All that stuff slows the machine down .

and clean up is free and takes no space - same with avg
I run clean up once a week and avg once a month (spyware ap) both are free
Bill don't think of computers as an appliance but rather your S2000 - it will run forever as long as you change the oil
there's no need to mod it or upgrade unless you want extras
I think it’s a matter of time before apples will have the same issues because more folks are using them
Bill - what is Chris and Barbara's main use? - surfing and some small apps - you could get them net books
as for software - i delete all the extra stuff that comes preloaded ie bloatware and keep it simple - MS office and a few other apps

bought a MacBook and used it for about a week. turned around and bought another PC. Macbook only gets used for checking cross-browser compatibility from time to time, but with PC Safari, issues are few and far between.
PC all the way.
