I don't know much about dogs but I think you are right! And I know the crazy cat people do 
(I'm a crazy cat person too, just temporarily w/o any cats at the moment.)
I feel bad for animals at all these kind of events. The animal doesn't get much out of it.
I have nothing against camels but it's hard to picture one in a "beauty contest" event
