I am in no way saying that there should not be a means of helping those who need "a hand up". We are a civilized society, and thus we do not let people starve and die. That is clear.
What I do not agree with is disproprotionatly taxing those who make more just because you can. In George's example, 20% of the population is paying 75% of the burden. That's not fair no matter how you slice it. Just by the very nature of making more money, you will pay more. Simple math. The problem is that they increase the tax rates for successful people to an extreme. Again, just because they can. Not fair when you consider how much struggle it took most of these people to get ahead and try to make a better life for themselves and their family.
Having been in college for a few years going for my associates degree, I saw MANY people who are not the brightest bulbs attending. Many were poor. They did not have to take out loans as the government gives tremendous financial aid incluing free books and such to these people. They struggle with some of the assignments, and sometimes have a tough go at it. The difference is that those who apply themselves CAN make it through.
Now that I am in school for my bachelors and eventually masters, I see less of the slower people. However there are some. If you are a family of 2 or 3 making $50k, you will quallify for hefty financial aid, no loans needed. What the govt. can't do for these people is light a fire under their asses to get out and do the studying. At most community colleges, there is free child care for students. Most of the people watching the kids are studying child care themselves.
We are not talking about mentally challenged people here. They cannot succeed in most cases because of their disability. I understand that. But those who decide to take the "easy" way out and become complacent in their "hard working" manual labor jobs do not have my sympathy. I am paying the same prices for milk/cereal and fuel as the next guy. The difference is that I was never satisfied in manual labor jobs and wanted a better future for myself and my family. Don't punish my family by over taxing me to pay for the guy who wouldn't help himself. That's all I am saying.
even now, with college degrees, I must work 50-60 hours a week most times to give my family a good life and enjoy things I like. If I break $100k doing that, I should not be penalized. A lot of times, the paper likes to report that police officers are making well above $100k. Some people look at that and say that they are over paid. What they don't see is that the guy making that money is always working and sacrifices family and personal time to get to that level. Why should we feel bad for the guy who works his 9-5 and goes home to slug down a 6 pack every night? I would love to be slugging down that smae six pack or hanging out with my wife/kids, but I chose to go to work to get ahead. There is the difference. I use my proffession as an example, but it applies to MANY proffessions where people put in tremendous hours not out of HAVING to, but becuas eof the desire to excel and succeed.

Oh, c'mon. Rhode Island's not even an island...sheesh...That should tell you something about the people that live there...
Yeah, that's fine for those guys. But what about the schmuck like me who may just happen to break into the next tax bracket if I work too much. There is only so much dog food that I can write off
Jeff, I'm still not so sure that so many of the Average Joes are college material, but I won't argue the point. I certainly can't/won't argue the point that if you are willing to work hard, you stand a much better chance of getting ahead than the guy/gal who won't, as that's a no brainer.
I know quite a few police officers and have heard folks talk about how much police officers make. They don't take into account the fact that the officer works overtime, or on his day off, or double shifts in order to earn that $$, and the ones griping about the police officers' pay do not even think about the true dregs of society that many of these officers have to deal with every day, every shift.
Now, somewhat back on topic...well one of the many topics of this thread...I also think that Average Joes, used to do OK in this country. They didn't struggle financially as many do now. They could get decent jobs on a high school education, back in the day when we still had a manufacturing base here. They could buy a house, and even take a vacation now and again. They were "middle class." That has changed drastically, those jobs are gone, housing costs, renting or buying are out of sight and the cost of living just keeps going up. All of this is making life very difficult for many people.
What do to? If I knew, I'd run for office.
