Excessive multivitamin intake has been shown to increase the risk of prostate cancer. Moreover, since there's practically no proof that a multivitamin really helps anyone with access to even half-decent food, I just don't bother taking one at all.

I eat a banana almost every day. I buy OJ with the Calcium + vitamin D for whatever that's worth, mostly because I don't drink milk. And when I do, I get soymilk with lots of vitamins added in. But I try to get my intake from as natural a source as possible rather than in a lab-refined pill form. I find it's generally much cheaper and more pleasant that way.
I would tend to agree with you. Often, after they do years of research, they often find these vitamins and supplements are not much more than a waste of your hard earned dollars.

Eat right, exercise, don't smoke, drink only a little, maintain your weight, is all most folks need to do. Hope that you got good genes in the family to avoid the "bad stuff."

I see no harm in a multi vitamin, and some calcium/iron for the ladies, but other than that, you would probably do just fine with proper diet and exercise. IF your diet is lacking, in a specific area, like protein, go ahead and add a protein shake if you want.

^ George, how much protein is there in a scoop of those designer brands. Would it be advisable to sometimes supplement with a scoop to get some protein into a lower calorie diet?

If you dont know thats ok, you just piqued my curiosity as Im currently on a self imposed lower calorie diet to bring my weight back to the healthier level.
Dave, you are doing a major disservice to your body if you are only eating 1000 calories a day because your body will just metabolize to the 1000 calories. This is not a safe way to lose weight and maintain a healthy lifestyle. IMO you are treading into dangerous territory because your body is not getting the food it is supposed to. Did you visit a nutritionist? It can be as simple as just avoiding any food in any shopping isle and only shop the perimeter. Notice all the healthy stuff is always out side of the junk food isles.

As for the protein. I am a big believer in only using these vitamins and powders as supplements to real food. The amount of protein in one scoop of protein powder I take is 18 grams. Another thing with these protein powders is to watch out for the sugar content. Some can be rather high.

What type of exercise are you doing?

How about egg white and chicken breast without skin? I think it is a good subsititude for protein powder.
