Does not sound like that huge a deal to me. Sure if I was on the flight I would be a little miffed, especially if I had a connection. People goof, it happens. Those planes can cover 150 miles in 15 minutes, not hard to lose track of time when distracted.

Should it happen? No. But I only think it is a major news story on a really slow newsday.
The real issue is they didn't respond to air traffic control for over an hour after repeated attempts to contact them. I don't see how when they are paid to be pilots and are in control of a plane full of people it's too much to expect them to shut the hell up and respond when they are contacted and then land the plane where they're supposed to.

It's not really the time issue, people deal with flight delays all the time. It's just that pesky "distracted" thing.

Not sure I want to be riding with pilots who've got their heads so far up their asses they miss the airport.

Most pilots do stuff like this...only thing is you don't usually know about it. Ignorance is bliss

Its not so much that they overshot the airport, but the fact that air traffic controllers didn't get a response from them for over an hour. I can see overshooting an airport, it has to be boring as sh!t sometimes sitting in the cockpit staring at the skyline especially on long flights.... but really what excuse is there for not responding to air traffic control for an hour when they are trying to reach you? I heard that they CLAIMED they were ina heated discussion about FAA regulations and procedures or some like that..... but the only possible explanation I can fathom is they were sleeping.... and that is complete they should be fired. I know I sure as fuck dont want to be on a plane where the pilots can't stay alert just in case an emergency situation arises.

Agreed. IMO no response = emergency/terrorists/major malfunction...

Luckily this thing turned out okay, but seriously, wtf? I think it has been made into a big deal due to national security concerns.

Could anyone imagine what would have happened if they overshot Richmond and flew over DC???

~100 miles in a plane that goes ~400 mph, not such a big deal. Not being in radio contact however, who knows. Maybe they were arguing about Corvette interior quality or whether or not they'd buy an LF-A.
