4,000 lbs.? Shoot, the worst offender at work drives a Porsche.

I hate that, but I also hate people that take up more than 1 parking space because either they don't want anyone to park next to them, or they are a crappy driver or their vehicle is too big (Giant SUV). I usually try to squeeze my SUV into that space (especially if it's by the driver's side of their vehicle) so it makes it really hard for them to get into their car.

This all happened this weekend. I'm going to start saying sh$t to people. If they are truly handicapped then i'll apologize profusely.

1. 35-40ish black female loading groceries in the back of her suburban at Marc's. No problem doing that or climbing into this behmoth.

2. 45ish white couple at Lowes. He and his wife were loading shelving in the back of his pickup truck. He was dirty and looked like he was working all day on his house. Probably on worker's comp too.

3. 50ish white/Jewish couple in the parking lot of Costco in a new 6 series Bimmer. Both very able bodied. I saw them walk around Costco for an hour.

4. 30ish black couple with 3 kids in the parking lot of City BBQ. Keep in mind that not only were they not handicapped, he was muscular. The funny thing is that there were two empty parking spaces closer to the door than the actual handicapped spaces.

WTF? Scot?
Your problem is that you are judging people from their exterior appearance--a rather superficial parameter. Take into consideration some of the examples given above such as kidney failure, etc.

You are right that if someone is taking advantage by using a disabled parking space when they have no reason to, but there is no way to really know.

If they have a tag, and obtained it legally, that is their right to use the space. If they stole the tag, obtained it illegally, etc., then yes they are in the wrong.

But exactly how are you going to know?

I have seen so many people that drive around with one in the glove box, (probably because someone else in the family qualifies) and park in the spot, fumble around for the tag, and hang it on the mirror.
Technically, they are following the directions printed on the handicap tag - you're not supposed to drive around with them hanging from the mirror since they restrict your visibility.

I've never needed a handicap spot, so it hasn't bugged me as much as people who park in the fire lanes, and especially people who park in front of fire lanes and block the main entrances. I mean, wth? Why aren't there any cops around to cite that bs?

Yeah, if some one has bad asthma, they won't look any different to you or me, but they won't be able to walk far or fast.

even though those placards are not difficult to get and that (non handicapped) people abuse that privilege, i've rarely if ever see all the handicap spaces taken in a parking lot. even if the parking lot is jam packed, and people are circling for 20 minutes for a space, there is always at least a couple of handicapped spaces available, so i don't think most genuine handicapped individuals have much problem finding available handicap spaces despite all the abuse of priviledges going around.

I knew a girl in high school with a handicap plate because she was 4'11... no joke. She said under 5" in CA qualifies you as some sort of handicap

if someone is hadicapped it means they are physically disabled.which means they don't have complete motor skills.which means how the hell can a physically disabled person drive a motor vehicle safetly!!

I never understood this.if you are sick physically you shouldn't be driving!!!

a car with a handicap placard can mean that the passenger is handicapped, and not necessarily the driver. besides, the physical act of driving is requires less physical exertion than walking, so just because someone is physically handicapped doesn't mean that he/she cannot operate a motor vehicle safely. also, there are modifications that can be done to vehicle controls that make it more handicap friendly.
