VNC is good stuff, been using it regularly for years now.

ironwedge, there is a client setting to "restirct pixel depth to 8-bit" which might speed things up for you.

One other lesser-known aspect is the ability to connect to a VNC server via the web on port 5800 - it automatically downloads a client applet, anywhere you happen to be!

We use PC Anywhere, Carbon Copy, VNC and NetOp for different systems (each product has its drawbacks and incompatibilities).

As a corporate standard we have decided on Remotely Anywhere. Its browser-based. Here is the FAQ for those who are interested :

VNC is cool. It does have a back door however so be careful putting it on PCs exposed to the public (not behind a firewall). It's performance leaves some to be desired, but for the price it works pretty good.
