Amsterdam
Hey guys,
My time has finally come for a trip to Amsterdam with small group of buddies this summer. I'm just starting to plan the trip, and I'll probably be there around the first or second week of July. I was just wondering if any of you have been there on vacation or what not and have some general advice of where to stay, what coffeeshops to check out, etc. Thanks so much!

I've been, just don't take any pics of the girls in the redlight district, or the bouncers will come out and break your camera. Most coffee shops also wont let you drink in there. I couldnt remember any names of good ones there. Good luck!
We got stoned and rented bikes. I'd recommend renting a bike. I'd also recommend getting stoned. Maybe not both at the same time.
Don't bother with the sex museum. It was pretty lame.

i have never been but have friends that have been. you can really just ask around if anything when you get over there to find the area where the highest concentration of coffee shops are

Oh yea, you would be well advised to go to Borders or Barnes and Nobles and get some maps and such BEFORE you leave. Study up and learn some of the "do's and don't" of "coffee shops and such".

i just went 2 weeks ago. if you're not staying in a hostel, i'd recommend renting an apartment...we got one from hotel hoksbergen. the stairs were crazy but having an apt (instead of a hotel) was pretty cool. the grocery store is just down the street, along with the main shopping street (kalverstraat, IIRC). oh yeah, and the red light district and lots of coffeeshops. actually, i highly recommend getting an apartment from them! they probably will be booked fast, if not already, for the summer.

the main city area is pretty small, so you can walk anywhere in like 10 - 20 minutes. we actually didn't do too much touristy stuff...just the heineken brouwery. there's a crapload of museums there, but we didn't go to any of them. well i guess the torture museum, that was interesting. i wanted to check out the anne frank house but never got around to it.
coffeeshops are all over the place and you wont have any trouble finding them. you can get space cakes and hash milkshakes at abraxas...but listen to the label warning on the space cakes when it tells you to start off with a small bite at first! the grey area is another famous one we went to. all of the coffeeshops are pretty cool, you'll like it
