MY BIASED OPINION
Shifty, As for a german shepard being bigger, throw it in water and you'll see how big it really is (read: its all fluff, the muscle structure isn't that big) My dog (above) is a 100lbs female doberman, nice as can be (except against birds, rabbits, squirrels or anything else that comes hopping / running / flying into my backyard)
She is HUGE for a doberman, and was bred to be like that (her brother is now around 125, normal male being around 85, normal female around 65).
It is true that dobermans are attention hogs, but thier aggressiveness is just a bad rap because they look mean with the cropped ears, and all the media shows is Dobermans as attack dogs (which GS's can and are also traind to be).
I think that most people would "feel more comfortable" around a strangers German Shepard, than around a strangers Doberman. If you have company ALOT and are worried about this I think a German Shepard would put them more at ease, just becasue they have most likely been trained to fear Dobe's.
Either way its up to you.

barking can be handled by training. I don't think of the two, one has an advantage over the other. They're both very intelligent and very trainable.
As much as dobermans have a bad rep from the media, you can't disagree with the fact that because of the stereotype and popularity, a lot of them have been improperly bred to be more agressive dogs. I've seen both calm as can be and wild, uncontrolled dobermans... it's all in the time and training that you can put in, and also finding a good lineage (which i assume your hookup is...?). But it's hard to fight instinct. I wouldn't consider the pinscher if i had small children. Even the shepard is kinda borderline (mainly due to their sizes). That kind of accident is jsut not worth it.
Regardless, you can't denounce the fact that dobermans are a more independent species that requires special attention, whereas german shepards are a more tolerant species.
Agreed is the fact that a doberman isn't necessarily smaller than a german shepard. The shepard is all fluff, whereas dobermans are solid dogs that can get just as big.
PS: I hate mini pinschers
Yapping, good for nothing, super-hyper kick toys
(no offense of course, spankee. Just IMO)

don't mean to hijack the thread, but:
Bouvier Des Flandres
doesn't shed...
good with kids...
barks when appropriate...
puts out 200% to your 100%...
Louie (pic) at 125 lbs... R.I.P.
doesn't fit in S2k, loved backseat of TLS...
chick magnet...*G*

By no means am i buying a dog for looks but IMO these two look like they could have that for lunch.

That pic he was 125, he was big, but average bouv is maybe 95 to 100...
he'd have them for lunch...
but I understand and respect your opinion and decision points... and I'm way biased...
he used to lie on my california king... he didn't smell that dog smell... bouvs love to be loved and would die if left outside, they have to be the center of your life... believe me, I know...*G*
good luck in your search...

Your welcome... and again, good luck...*G*
also, you may want to consider "rescue", Louie was a rescue from the breed group for southern cali... I had to screen like I was adopting a baby, but it all worked out really well... Got him at 5 years old and he had a great life for another 5 and a half...
We put miles on the Boardwalk at the beach, amazing how we could work together, if you know what I mean...*G*
And he was totally spoiled... way way spoiled...*G*
