Shift...what I like about the GS is that, for the most part, they are VERY easily trained. I'm not sure about Dobee's.

As for shedding, it's a problem two times a year and when he's sick. You saw that the last time you came over. The way the wife and I deal with it is by vaccuming at least once or twice a week.

We plan to get wood floors in the next year, so vacuuming will be much easier.

I love the obedience, the pack-loyal mentality, investigating before jumping to a defensive conclusion, the sense of telepathy (I swear my dog knows what I'm thinking and reacts before I even say anything....more on this later), and the shear royalty-look.

The next dog I get, if I have anything to say about it, will be another GSD (and I will make sure that the papers are legit this time). However, the wife is hell-bent on getting a silver-blue Warmerreigner (sp?) for the next dog.

Hell, maybe we'll be a three-dog and one cat family with no kids (I can surely live with that).

yellafeva,

If Shifty wanted a tow-truck, he would have started a thread about tow-trucks. Why the hell is the Tosa Inu considered a dog? No one dog should be rated as being able to pull 3500 lbs.!!!

That dog could pull my S2000 out of a freakin' ditch!

Shift, you have a reply to your PM.
I didn't answer a couple of your questions. Shed, yes. My GS has a thick coat and is a "house dog". We have to dust mop daily or our stone floors look like they are shag carpets. Since we have no carpets so it's not a real problem.
Smell- she got a bath when it quit raining, in April. Her last one was in November. She didn't smell. She sleeps in our bedroom- no way could she smell and get away with it.
Bark, it's all in the training. My first GS I had when I lived in the city and had neighbors 20 feet away. He never barked. Heard him growl maybe 5 times his whole life. Now our nearest neighbor is 1/2 mile away and we want to know if someone is around, and she (#2) barks and growls at anything out of the ordinary.
BTW, ask the breeder if they breed for the german "sloped-back" look, where the hind end is much lower than the front. Ours goes for the level back look, and the larger shepherds. Our female is about 85 pounds. All personal choice. My female is as big as the males the cops use for police work (the ones I have seen anyway).

raj: yea, not a fan of the toy dogs either. I prefer the sporting dogs...they're so playful w/o being annoying. And no human sized mounds of poop (i poop quite a lot for a 150 pounder )

trippinbillies: just wait till the terrible two's hit dogs can be so sneaky!

as for the smell...i find it to be really hit or miss. In the way you feed them, bathe them, and their hygeine. Hey, just like people!

Thanks for all the comments, but here are some answers, this is gonna be an indoor dog. I did some more reading, and people say that both of these dogs do not have the typical doggy odor. They require baths once every month. The shedding at Luders house kinda made me think twice again, but I love that dog. I will be getting a pure bred. Im still looking for a breeder (Morris i'll send her an email later on today). As far as coloration goes for the German I would like a black and red, and as for the doberman I like the black and tan coloration. I will be looking for a male in both breeds, what type of differences can i expect from a male as opposed to a female (other then size)? Which is easier to maintain, regardless of gender the dog would be neuterd (sp?) or spayed.

Now getting back to the BEAST OF ALL DOGS! Its called the PRESA CANARIO, these things were bred to fight as well. They can get up 130+ and are extremely powerful! I was on a k-9 site and they said that these dogs bites were much more powerful then anything they had seen (given that they deal with rots,GS,doberman and pitbulls).

^^Speaking of insanely dangerous dogs, I saw a show on the Caucasian Mountain Dog the other day. I think these now top my list of scary dogs and I can see why the Russian military used them--although they are beautiful.

Male vs Female...

I prefer females. Males have a higher chance of running away during mating season. But they are more territorial, which is good if you're looking for security. But one thing that irks me... they can't aim for a lick. Females squat to go wee wee... none of that lift your leg bullcrap. And much less marking of territory.

Then there's the humpage. Females have a chance of doing it to show dominance, but males... ugh. It can be controlled with training, but you're getting a puppy... so it's something you'll be dealing with. Usually neutering takes care of it, but old habits can be hard to break if you let it get out of hand

Female, you'd have to deal with periods & heat, but that's a nonissue since you already said you're spaying (make sure to do it before their first cycle. Lessens the chance of later problems as well). Males tend to be more "ideal" of the species in regards to muscle build and "the look", and are more fun loving, silly dogs.

Other than that... the most obvious are the physical attributes (ever see a female dog get aroused?). Aside from the first paragraph above, the rest are just very general stereotypes that can be molded in their upbringing.
