Do you honestly think that surgery/medecine is the only profession that is subject to long hours, years of study and under appreciation punctuated by litigation?

Your generalisation about lawyers is about as fair as me saying that medicine is full of crooked backyard plastic surgeons that overcharge and underperform. Personally I find most of what I read in this thread hipocritical and bordering on martydom.

The grossly overinflated salaries that exist today are testament to the greedy society that we live in. How does one wrong justify another? Because fat lazy CEOs earn X amount of dollars so should I etc etc.

So many people today earn more than they can spend and all that does is increase the distance of the rich from the poor. India is a perfect example of how things eventuate when the rich get richer and the poor get poorer, we make a complete circle of socialism and return to (virtual) slavery with sweat shops in place of cotton fields.

Im not trying to preach that this is why doctors dont deserve X amount of dollars, perhaps some do, but I wouldn't try to compare what I do with them until I walked a mile in their shoes and I feel that a lot of people in this thread have done that which is unfair and disappointing when there was a good opportunity for an open minded discussion on the subject.

Im in my sixth year of tertiary education and when I graduate next year Ill have over 4 years of industry experience, I'll most likely take a job posted in somewhere like south africa or outback Australia and Ill still only earn about $50,000US a year but to me its not just about me and how many objects I can accumulate at the expense of others. I see my work as a long term career that can generate wealth for myself as well as others with sustainability in mind, not a way of extorting money out of people that require my specialised services so that I can get that new set of wheels by next week.

Of course this is just my opinion and you're all entitled to your own, encouraged even, but the next time you slam your hand down on the table and contest the value of your role in society, try and consider the possibility that you're not the only one out there that has to work hard for your money

OSU... this is a perfect example of what I was talking. The general public can't understand and refuses to even try.
Its a waste of time to even try. OSU, shoot me a PM sometime if you need a sympathetic ear.... been there, done that. got the T-shirt. It helps to co-miserate.

It seems like every time someone mentions something the docs don't like the wagons are circled, the pity parade is called out and the "oh you could never understand" card is pulled out.

It really kills an otherwise good line of discussion.

On the other hand you have to give credit where credit is due, the responses on this board have been mature and with respect -- something the porsche guys seem incapable of doing. Is it true? Are Porsches really driven by pricks?

Example #2... keep 'em comming.

Steve, a good discussion NEVER results. I and others have tried, failed and tried again....so why bother. The "discussion" degenerates into personal attacks and calling one's professional character into question. If we ever met face to face, I'd give it a shot. Over the internet.... no friggin way.

it seems difficult for the docs or attorneys, or whomever to admit (I admit that I'm scum of the earth) that, perhaps, they are a bit overpaid and they aren't the only ones with stress in their lives.

Perhaps a good 'ol paycut is the remedy. That way the medical, legal, etc. professions can weed out those who are there to line their pockets and those who are born to prcatice regardless of pay. It would be interesting to see how many docs would still be docs if they made $35k/year.

Fair enough. Can't blame me for trying though -- being a stay at home dad I don't have much else to do lately.

A bit drastic, but yeah it would be. I have a neighbor who has an undergrad degree from Cornell, a masters from CU Boulder and was/is a respected expert in his field (lighting design). He gave it all up to teach middle school gifted math -- for a whopping 31k a year. Obviously this is not for everyone -- but I have a lot of respect for folks like him.
