Shitty job with regard to what Scot implied when he said, "****ing 'workers comp' lawyer." Its a fine job IMO as I went on to explain in my earlier post.

I'm pursuing a law degree as opposed to an MBA because I like the options that a law degree affords (in case my life's ambitions fall through).

Fine enough. Just sounds weird to hear, "I'm going to law school, but I don't want to be a lawyer." MBA is cheaper and shorter, plus no bar. Also seems like it would be a more natural transition into entrepreneurship wth an MBA. IMO, most people who go to law school end up practicing law (i.e. being a lawyer) in one form or another. Good luck with your pursuits.

For my business degree I had to take a business law course. I would never want to become a lawyer after that class. Rather try to become a doctor before a lawyer anyday.

Just out of curiousity....why do you guys want to become lawyers?

I had a great roommate in college and now he is a ****ing "workers comp" lawyer in Pittsburgh.... i hope like hell he is still a good guy but they are notorious for being scumbags....

my work has wasted $$$$$ defending against jackass lawyers who completely exagerate everything some dickbag did... eventually we win in court but after spending $$$ to do it.

anyway.....goodluck to everyone getting in and doing well.....
That's funny, because I am sure you had lawyers to defend you in those worker's comp suits. Does that mean your lawyers are scumbags too? Lawyers serve their clients. They aren't the ones that sue McDonald's because their coffee is too hot, and they don't decide verdicts. Their JOB is to do their best to prosecute or defend their client's case. If anyone is to blame, it is the client.

Running out of time there. The later you apply, the fuller the classes will be at the schools you apply to.

Scot, going to law school doesn't necessarily mean you're going to become a lawyer. My ultimate goal is to be a sports agent and a J.D. is the first step. Doesn't mean I may not eventually become a lawyer in another area but you have to take the first step.
Sup guys... I am a 2nd year student at Penn State Dickinson. Any of you guys applying here?

We have a big sports guy here, search Steven Ross on google. Real smart guy, tough teacher. Its real tough to get in to sports law unless you know someone about to go pro that trusts you. There are very few agents that actually do well and not that many athletes. You actually have a better chance of becoming a professional athlete then become a sports agent. Good luck though, would be a fun job.

okay okay.... so there are lots of good / decent / morally correct lawyers..... just the handful of dicks give the entire profession a bad name.

case in point - guy is in jail for molesting a 5 year old..... he apparently became sick and died...."now the family plans to sue everyone with Handler Henning and Rosen****"....

i think those late night commercials make it sound like suing everyone is the right thing to do..... anyway

goodluck to all people who want to go to law school to NOT be ambulance chasers.

There are probably several reasons why lawyers get such a bad rap:

1. The media portrays them this way. Shows revolving around the law (e.g. Law and Order) need exciting plots and antagonists, and in the course of the trial, the lawyer seems to take on the role of the antagonist when he defends the real perpetrator. Actually, all he is doing is serving an important role in the justice system and doing his job. How would we all like it if everyone accused of a crime was just sent to be shot somewhere without having his case heard?

2. Lawyers get the blame because they are the ones arguing the case and they are well-versed in philosophy and formal logic. They can tear apart arguments using their education and knowledge, and that makes ppl feel angry when they can't argue back because they lack the skills in formal logic. They are angry because they are losing an argument they can't win, and they blame lawyers for their losses. It's really quite amateur when you think about it.

3. Lawyers charge a lot, and no one likes being charged a lot. But does this make them bad ppl? I think interior decorators probably deserve more hate than lawyers. Because they make a lot of money, a lot of other professionals envy them.

And I'm not sure if I understand the problem with ambulance chasers. Clients that were injured by another party deserve representation and compensation if the other party was responsible for the accident. If someone T-bones me in the middle of an intersection, I hope that a lawyer shows up and provides me with the right legal guidance. Both parties are served well: the lawyers need to make a living and the clients need representation. What is the problem? Capitalizing on someone else's misfortune? I mean, by that method of reasoning doctors (along with everyone else) have to work for free for doing their respective jobs.

Or if a doctor committed malpractice and amputated the wrong leg. Is the lawyer to blame for prosecuting a case against the doctor?

Would you rather live in a totalitarian state where you didn't have the option to be represented and have your case heard?

i have an MBA plus some really bankable experience in CE and IT, i figure the law degree will be icing on the cake and will open a whole lot of doors like the MBA did for me. at this point in time it's 40% about the money and 60% about the career/life experience whereas when i got my MBA money was a major driving force. i'm not sure if i'll ever practice but it'll be great to have the knowledge.

in-state tuition is cheap compared with my MBA...
